Brian Hughes blog 21/04/2023 – Famous Bridge one to keep an eye on

Racing at Ayr – Saturday 22nd April

Bet Here

1:15

I kick off my rides on Scottish Grand National day with Pay The Piper in the handicap chase (1.15pm). He ran on nicely at Aintree last time, but obviously the slight worry is that was only nine days ago. If he’s got over that then he should be involved as he’s got the ability to run a big race.

1:50

I’d be a tad worried about the ground for Donna’s Double in the Champion Handicap Chase (1.50pm). It looks like being on the good side which will be quicker than he used to, but he’s got a light weight and hopefully he’ll run a nice, solid race.

2:25

I ride Royal Mogul in the Scottish Champion Hurdle (2.25pm). He’s having a really good season, having run four times and not been out of the first two, so let’s hope he can continue his good form here. This race is a big step up in grade for him and he’s a few pounds out of the handicap, but we think he’s an improving type and we wouldn’t be surprised if he ran really well.

3:35 – Scottish Grand National

Famous Bridge is my mount in the Scottish Grand National (3.35pm). He comes into the race in good form having won his last two, but I suppose the lack of experience – having only had four runs over fences – is a big question mark. The ground would be a slight concern too because he likes getting his toe in, but he’s a nice horse going forward and is definitely one to keep an eye on in staying handicap chases next season.

I’d be pretty hopeful he’ll stay the trip and it’s just whether a lack of experience here might catch him out here as I do think a lot of this horse.

4:10

I ride Glinger Flame in the handicap hurdle (4.10pm) who makes his first start in quite a while. Given the lay-off, you’d expect him to come forward for whatever he does here, so we’re not setting our expectations too high on his first run back. Nicky [Richards] is happy with him at home, though.

5:20

Finally, I’m on Giacosa in the bumper (5.20pm). He didn’t run too badly on his debut at this course, and he should improve on the back of that, though he’ll need to step up on that form to feature here. I’ve actually won this race for the last two years and hopefully this lad can bring up the hat-trick!
