FA Cup 4th Round – 29/01/2023, 1:30pm

Brighton host Liverpool in the FA Cup just two weeks after thumping them 3-0 in the Premier League at The Amex.

The Seagulls set down a marker that day and they have their sights on a fifth-placed finish this season.

That game was as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests with Brighton dominating possession, chances and shots on target. It was certainly not a freak game and even Jurgen Klopp said afterwards it was not a “one-off” result.

“No, this is not how we say a one-off, or something like that. Unfortunately not,” said Klopp.

“The moment is not great. Yes, we have injury problems and all these kind of things but come on. The team we could line up was absolutely not a bad one – really not. But what we made of it was not good, that’s true.”

Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool did have injury problems and still do with Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino all still missing. But Klopp thought his side, which included Fabino, Mohamed Salah, Thiago, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold was good enough to do better.

Those protagonists are likely to play again, but it’s hard to see a different result for the Reds, who have lost at Brentford and Man City, as well as Brighton in their last eight games.

Brighton have lost Leandro Trossard, but the winger never played against Liverpool first time out. And his replacement Kaoru Mitoma has been in brilliant form.

Mitoma has five goals in nine games, while it was Solly March who did the damage against Klopp’s men earlier this month.

Brighton ruthlessly exposed Klopp’s experimental 4-1-4-1 formation and the Reds will likely revert to a 4-3-3 formation.

But it’s hard to see past another home win. Brighton have scored 19 goals in their last six games – and with Van Dijk missing they will fancy themselves to break through a Liverpool defence, who struggle without their talisman.

Key stats

  • Brighton have scored three goals in their last two meetings with Liverpool
  • Brighton have gone four games unbeaten in all competitions
  • Liverpool have won just once in their last five games in all competitions
