Philadelphia Eagles vs Los Angeles Rams Preview

The Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams clash in a huge playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field on January 19th at 8:00 pm. Both teams came through the Wild Card playoff round with impressive performances and now have one eye on the Super Bowl.

The Eagles ran riot against LA the last time they met in November. Can the Rams get revenge on the road, or will Philadelphia repeat their performance on their way to the Conference Championship round?

Philadelphia Eagles vs Los Angeles Rams Predictions

Correct score prediction: Eagles 31-17 Rams

The Los Angeles Rams were impressive in their Wild Card game, pulling off the upset against the Minnesota Vikings. They dominated both sides of the ball and were especially impressive against the run. That defence has been the lynchpin of their playoff run and has carried them through their games. However, they now face one of the strongest teams in the league, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Philly was strong in the regular season, improving from their 11-6 finish last season to top the NFC East with a 14-3 record. They have continued that form in the playoffs. The Eagles bullied the Green Bay Packers in a 22-10 win during Wild Card weekend. Nick Sirriani’s team now finds themselves among the favourites to win the Super Bowl and have a favourable draw in the divisional round. Our American football prediction is for the Philadelphia Eagles to defeat the LA Rams.

The LA Rams have been excellent on defence in the postseason so far, plugging holes that were there throughout the regular season. However, they now face a side that terrorised them on offence the last time they met, namely their run offence. Saquon Barkley secured an incredible 255 rushing yards and two touchdowns.  Despite their sound record, the Rams’ defence was their Achilles’ heel throughout the regular season. Philadelphia can take advantage and put them to the sword.

The Rams will probably dedicate extra bodies to Barkley after the nightmares he left them with last time. This is a lose-lose for Los Angeles. Space will open up for the likes of AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith with a safety closer to the line of scrimmage. Their defence must be at the top of their game, but we have not seen that enough from the Rams throughout the season.

Philadelphia are excellent at controlling the ball with an average possession time of 32 minutes and 23 seconds. They are especially dominant when they have a second-half lead. The Rams have a good offensive corps with Matthew Stafford looking out at Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp, but the Eagles will reduce Stafford’s chances at getting his hands on the ball.

It is important not to understate this LA Rams’ defence in the playoffs so far. Their switch is night and day with a more aggressive line. They lead the postseason with nine sacks and have the third-best yardage allowed at just 269 yards per game. If that defence turns up, this becomes a far tougher game for Philly.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Los Angeles Rams Betting Tips

The Philadelphia Eagles are solid favourites for this game, worth 7/20 with our online bookmaker. They already boast a victory over the Rams this season and have the home advantage in this game. However, a €10 stake offers marginal returns at €3.50. We think there are more profitable bets to be made.

The Los Angeles Rams have already caused an upset in the playoffs with their defeat of the Minnesota Vikings last week. They cannot be underestimated. Sean McVay’s team is 6-1 since that loss to the Eagles in November. They picked up towards the end of the regular season and have carried that form into the playoffs.

Handicap

The handicap for this game is floating around between six and seven points for anyone betting on the NFL. Philadelphia is 10-3 against the spread this season and covered by two touchdowns against LA in November. They have covered six of their last eight home games against the Rams. We are backing them on the higher end of the spread. Bet on the Philadelphia Eagles to cover -6.5, worth 17/20.

Player Props

There is one focus for our player props here. Saquon Barkley has proven his injury worries are behind him, enjoying an incredible season so far. His 2,000+ rushing yard season has included 302 all-purpose yards against the LA Rams. He can come back to haunt McVay and co at Lincoln Financial Field. We are more interested in his receiving line here. He averaged 17 receiving yards per game in the regular season and pulled in 47 yards through the air the last time he played the Rams. We like a bet on Barkley over 11.5 receiving yards, worth 10/11 for anyone betting on American football.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Los Angeles Rams Head-To-Head and Key Stats

These teams last met on November 25th at SoFi Stadium. The Philadelphia Eagles ran out deserved winners in a 37-20 mauling. Barkley was the star of the show, putting up over 300 all-purpose yards along with two touchdowns. AJ Brown was also excellent, finishing with 109 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Matthew Stafford had a good game with 243 yards and two passing touchdowns but was let down on the other side of the ball. He was also left exposed by his offensive linemen, who allowed five sacks. Puka Nacua also had a strong game, pulling 117 yards through the air through nine receptions.

The Los Angeles Rams finished the regular season strongly to work their way into the playoffs. They topped the NFC West with a 10-7 record, edging out the Seattle Seahawks who finished identically. A solid run of five straight victories in December helped them over the line and into the Wild Card playoffs, where they played most recently. They clashed with the Minnesota Vikings, entering as underdogs.

The Rams started as they meant to go on, opening the game with a touchdown scoring drive consisting of seven plays with a made fourth and 10. Stafford found Kyren Williams for a five-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. They rounded out with a field goal to end the quarter up 10-0. Los Angeles punished Minnesota in the second quarter. Jared Verse took a fumble recovery 57 yards to the house and Davis Allen latched onto a 13-yard pass for a third TD for LA. They sent a stunned Vikings team back to the locker rooms down 24-3 at halftime.

Sean McVay shut up shop for the second half. A field goal pushed them further ahead while Minnesota managed a lone touchdown in the third, albeit with a missed extra point. No further points were scored as the LA Rams completed a spectacular performance on both sides of the ball, progressing to the divisional round.

The Philadelphia Eagles were forced into a Wild Card playoff game despite their 14-3 record following the Detroit Lions 15-2 finish. They continued to progress under Nick Sirriani as he hunts for his first Super Bowl since agonisingly stumbling over hurdles at each try so far. Philly tumbled after a shaky start to the season to win 12 games in 13 between October and January. They met the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card playoffs.

Philly took an early lead through a quick drive after kickoff. It took just three plays for Jalen Hurts to get his team on the scoreboard. He found Jahan Dotson with an 11-yard pass. Both sides exchanged punts before Philly furthered their lead with a field goal to put them up 10-0 at the end of the quarter. The Packers missed a field goal and Zack Baun intercepted a Jordan Love pass to keep them out up to halftime.

Green Bay finally got on the board with a field goal in the third quarter. It didn’t take long for a Philly reply as Hurts found Dallas Goedert in the end zone for his second touchdown pass of the game. The Eagles continued to bully the Packers for the remainder of the game. Josh Jacobs breathed some life into the Packers with a TD to make it a one-score game, but they were quickly dashed with successive three-pointers from Philly. They ran out deserved winners and never looked close to losing the lead.

Philadelphia Eagles Team News

Tight end Dallas Goedert was out of training with illness on Thursday. He is expected to recover in time for a return on Sunday. AJ Brown is still managing his knee injury but was back on the practice field on Wednesday. There are no fresh injury worries for Philly and Nick Sirriani looks to have a fully healthy roster by the time Sunday comes around.

LA Rams Team News

Rams fans have been boosted by news from Sean McVay of returns for several players. Tyler Higbee, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, Bobby Brown III, and Alaric Jackson are all expected to play in Sunday’s divisional-round playoff game against the Eagles. That means no fresh injury worries are heading into the game against Philadelphia.
