Triumph Hurdle Betting Tips

The Triumph Hurdle is a race in which many young horses put their unbeaten records on the line. Banned last year, trainer Gordon Elliott is back and apologetic if not totally forgiven. He does however boast a superb record in this particular race and looks to go strong again now that he is has returned. While Willie Mullins’ Vauban is the odds on favourite, he was beaten by Elliot’s Pied Piper at Punchestown on the final day of last year who then followed that up by producing an easy nine length win in the recent Triumph Hurdle trial race at Cheltenham so very much looks like a future star in the making.

This is not to dismiss our odds on favourite Vauban – or the long term ante post favourite Elliot runner Fil D’Or – for that matter, but at 8/5 and facing a horse who has already beaten him, the price doesn’t quite fit the reward. The four year old won by a decent three lengths over Fil Dor when last out. That was back at the Dublin Racing Festival, just after having missed out against Pied Piper by half a length at Punchestown. Both of those runs will have provided the perfect preparation for Cheltenham which does go some way to justifying his short price.

All About The Triumph Hurdle

The Triumph Hurdle is for juvenile novice hurdlers and is the leading National Hunt event exclusively held for juveniles. Because this is a race for future stars races, this is a race that is only open to four year olds meaning this traditional curtain raiser, which runs on the fourth and final day of the festival, gets a completely new line up every year.

It is another Group One contest at the four day celebration of jump racing. This is a hurdle race that is run on Cheltenham’s New Course and is open to horses that are aged four years and is run on the New Course over a distance of two miles and 179 yards during which there are eight hurdles to clear.

A History Of The Triumph Hurdle

This event was first established in 1939 and was actually a race that was originally held at Hurst Park in Surrey. Six of the first seven winners were French based. This was no fluke, in its early history this race was regularly contested by horses exclusively trained in France. In 1954, the flat racing jockey Lester Piggott pulled off one of his twenty hurdle victories in this very race while it was still based in Surrey.

Hurst Park shut down in 1962 meaning that the Triumph Hurdle did not take place in 1963 and 1964. One year later, the race got the shot in the arm it needed when it was revived and transferred to Cheltenham in 1965. Originally running in Cheltenham’s April meeting, it wasn’t for another three years that race was to be included as part of festival in 1968. Many winners of the Triumph Hurdle go on compete in the Champion Hurdle. Only four horses have ever won both events, however. These are Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit.
