Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Preview
Manny Pacquiao makes his grand return to professional boxing in a welterweight title clash with Mario Barrios on July 19th. The Filipino will step into the ring for his first pro bout since his retirement in 2021.
Mario Barrios won the WBC interim welterweight title after dismantling Yordenis Ugás in 2023. Can he defend his title against one of the greatest of all time, or will Pacquiao put on a vintage performance to win the belt in his comeback fight?
Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Predictions
Fight prediction: Mario Barrios via KO/TKO
One of our top boxing predictions this week sees Mario Barrios stopping the legendary Manny Pacquiao in a passing-of-the-torch performance on Saturday night. While Pacquiao’s return has generated buzz, this may be the wrong opponent at the wrong time. Barrios is bigger, younger, sharper and more confident than ever. Against an ageing Pacquiao who hasn’t fought since 2021, this could be the night Barrios makes a serious statement at welterweight.
Barrios has looked rejuvenated since moving back to 147, blending size, discipline, and power to great effect. His destruction of Yordenis Ugas was a welcome back to the division for Barrios. All three judges had him winning at least nine rounds, with two marking him for 10 out of the 12. His timing, body work, and ability to control pace have steadily improved.
Barrios is not a flashy fighter, but he’s smart and punishing. Against Pacquiao, those traits will be crucial. Expect Barrios to start patiently, probing with the jab and steadily investing in the body. He’ll force Pacquiao to fight at an uncomfortable rhythm. That’s when the cracks may begin to show.
The size difference between these men is stark. Barrios is 6½” taller than Pacquiao and has a healthy 3” reach advantage. He will sit behind his jab and keep PacMan from engaging. Expect Barrios to use his length to control the distance, dictate the tempo, and frustrate Pacquiao’s attempts to close the gap. He’ll work behind a steady jab, touch the body, and make Pacquiao reset every time he tries to launch an attack. With his height and reach, Barrios can smother Pacquiao’s combinations before they start, forcing the veteran to take risks just to get inside.
Pacquiao is one of the best boxers of all time, but he enters this bout having not fought a professional bout since 2021. Of course, we all know the ability and class PacMan once possessed, but his peak finished 15 years ago. The 46-year-old still displayed some of his textbook hand speed in his exhibition bout with Rukiya Anpo in July last year, but his head movement was slow and sloppy.
Pacquiao still exhibits flashes of his old brilliance and demonstrates his ability to adjust mid-fight, with moments of sharp counters, sudden bursts, and quick feet. However, his reflexes have faded, and so has his engine. Barrios is, at worst, on the fringes of an elite-level fighter. Pacquiao will be made to pay for that kind of sloppiness, more so than he was against Anpo.
The danger for Pacquiao will come as the rounds wear on. Barrios is a patient finisher who breaks opponents down systematically. If he can land clean to the midsection and slow Pacquiao’s legs, openings upstairs will follow. Don’t be surprised if Barrios begins to walk him down by the mid-rounds, using his reach and physicality to bully the smaller man. A war of attrition won’t favour the older fighter.
Pacquiao’s heart and legacy are beyond reproach, but boxing is a young man’s game. The pace, power, and pressure of Barrios could be too much for the Filipino icon at this stage. This won’t be a reckless shootout; it’ll be a calculated, punishing dismantling.
Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Fight Outcome
Barrios will use his size and speed to dictate the tempo and exchanges in this fight. Pacquiao simply no longer possesses the kind of head movement, footwork or hand speed that it would take to step in and confidently fight inside the pocket. El Azteca should dominate all areas of this bout, cutting off the ring and picking Pacquiao apart on the outside.
Pacquiao has to wind back the clock to pull off an upset. He needs to find a way to close the distance early and overwhelm Barrios with combinations. If he can keep the fight in close quarters, he can disrupt the younger man’s rhythm. The 46-year-old has to make Barrios respect him by landing early and forcing him back. However, that is far easier said than done. If Barrios fights ruthlessly, this fight will probably not go beyond the seventh or eighth round. The referee, or Pacquiao’s corner, may be forced to step in. This could end emphatically for El Azteca.
Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Betting Tips
- Method of Victory – Mario Barrios via KO/TKO: This is the best way to bet on Barrios. The WBC welterweight champion is a healthy 3/10 favourite, which may even be too generous to Pacquiao. Realistically, Barrios should win this any way he chooses. If he is ruthless, he can make this his 19th knockout victory. Back El Azteca to win via KO/TKO, worth 21/20.
- Grouped Round Betting – Barrios Rounds 1-6: Barrios can make a statement and get Pacquiao out in the first half of this fight. He has a decent knockout record and should be the first to every punch during exchanges, given his speed and size. Whether he respects Pacquiao too much to leave him staring at the lights is another question, but a ruthless El Azteca can finish PacMan within six. Barrios to win between rounds 1-6 is worth 9/2 for anyone betting on boxing.
- Over/Under – Under 10.5 rounds: This is the best option for anyone betting on the over/under. This is a championship bout, and Barrios should make a statement in victory here. We like a bet on the fight to go under 10.5 rounds, worth 17/20 with our online sportsbook.
Mario Barrios vs Manny Pacquiao Head-To-Head and Key Stats
Manny Pacquiao’s Recent Form
This will be Manny Pacquiao’s first professional fight since he announced his retirement from boxing in September 2021. The Filipino is one of the greatest fighters of all time, with a 62-8-2 (39 KOs) record. He is the only fighter in history to win major titles in eight different weight classes. PacMan was rated the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world during his career, blessed with incredible power and speed and a technique that only seemed to get better with age.
He fights again after foraying back into boxing in 2022 for an exhibition bout with martial artist DK Yoo. Pacquiao won that fight and was back in the ring again in July last year, facing Rukiya Anpo, under Rizin Special standing bout rules. The fight was ruled a draw, but Pacquiao rarely showed the speed and power he was once famed for. Pacquiao still has the heart and displays flashes of speed, but this may be a bridge too far for the 46-year-old.

Mario Barrios’ Recent Form
Mario Barrios comes into this fight with momentum and confidence following his resurgence at welterweight. Since moving up from 140lbs, Barrios has gone 3-1-1, with his only loss coming in a competitive bout against Keith Thurman. He bounced back in style with a TKO victory against Jovanie Santiago, followed by a dominant performance over Yordenis Ugas in September 2023. El Azteca dropped him twice en route to a wide unanimous decision victory, winning the vacant WBC interim welterweight title. He survived a scare when he drew to Abel Ramos in his last bout after being knocked down in round six.
At 30, Barrios is in his physical prime and continues to mature technically under the guidance of his team. His ability to manage range, mix up his attacks, and remain composed under pressure has made him one of the more dangerous and underrated contenders in the division. He enters this bout with a record of 29-2-1 (18 KOs). El Azteca will be eying a huge clash with Terence Crawford or unification bouts against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis.
