Oxford United vs Portsmouth Preview

Oxford United and Portsmouth renew a competitive rivalry on February 15th at 12:30 pm as both teams look to move further away from the relegation zone. Both sides came into the Championship following promotion last season after a lengthy time away.

Pompey have begun to pick up form, pulling themselves up and out of the relegation zone. Oxford have surprised many with their performances so far, and Gary Rowett has enjoyed a strong start to life at the Kassam Stadium. Can one of the Championship new boys snatch all three points on Saturday afternoon?

Oxford United vs Portsmouth Predictions

Correct score prediction: Oxford United 1-1 Pompey

Oxford United have been somewhat of a surprise package in the Championship this season. The U’s were promoted last season after beating Bolton Wanderers in the playoff final, with many expecting them to struggle upon their return to the second tier of English football after 25 years. Despite a perceived smaller budget and being a somewhat smaller team, Oxford are currently sitting above both teams who came up with them, including Saturday’s opponents.

Portsmouth had a baptism of fire upon their return to the Championship. The League One champions played five of the current top six within their first seven games and had to wait 10 games for their first win. That left them playing catchup with the rest of the league, but Pompey have salvaged enough points to keep their head just above the relegation zone right now. John Mousinho’s men have looked impressive of late, and reinforcements in the January window have strengthened their hopes of staying up.

This is a tough match to call. Oxford have drawn their previous four games, and Portsmouth have been poor away from home this season. Our soccer prediction is for a draw at the Kassam Stadium, but we also think the Blues could snatch a victory.

A heart defect kept star striker Colby Bishop out of Pompey’s first 14 fixtures of the season. A turnaround in form coincided with his return to the team. Pompey picked up just nine points in those 14 fixtures compared to 20 in the 14 after Bishop’s return. It is not just his goal contribution that is important, but his all-round play. His work in the build-up has helped Pompey bring other attackers into play, with Josh Murphy and Callum Lang shining with Bishop beside them. There is no shortage of goals in this Blues side, and they have outscored Oxford this season.

Oxford can take advantage of a weakened Pompey defence. The U’s have struggled to score of late but have not conceded many. Portsmouth have shown defensive frailty this season. Only one team has conceded more than the Blues in the Championship. Part of that has to go down to their injury woes with their main centre-back pairing, Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy, not starting a single game together. Although Portsmouth have added reinforcements, they continue to concede goals at an alarming rate. If Oxford can keep the Blues out, they can take a narrow victory here.

Pompey’s depth is much improved after the January transfer window. They brought in eight players, including Isaac Hayden, who boasts 118 Premier League appearances and highly rated Liverpool youngster Kaide Gordon. That has helped coach John Mousinho rotate his side with more quality, giving much-needed rests to his most important players. They can enter this game fresher and more confident, with better options off the bench.

The U’s could take advantage of the home advantage here. Portsmouth have been extremely poor on the road this season, with a record of 1-4-11. Oxford have been very strong at home with an 8-5-3 record. If they can frustrate the Hampshire side, they may snatch a narrow victory. Gary Rowett has had a successful start to life at Oxford and will want to make Kassam Stadium a fortress.

This will be a tight game in what may be a six-pointer. Oxford have performed above expectations so far this season, sitting comfortably nine points above the relegation zone, but have to start scoring more. Portsmouth’s improvements in January and some convincing performances in recent games may signify a turning point in their season. However, Pompey’s poor away form and Oxford’s struggles in front of goal make a draw the most likely outcome.

Oxford United vs Portsmouth Betting Tips

We like a bet on a draw for this match. Oxford have drawn three of their previous four games, and the last meeting between these sides ended 1-1. Only three teams in the league have drawn more games than the U’s, and this looks like a tight battle on paper. A bet on a draw is worth 11/5 with our online bookmaker.

Pompey are bobbing just above the relegation zone, but their performances have improved in recent weeks. Their outing against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane proved they have what it takes to perform on the road, with Chris Wilder bemused at just how lucky his team was to snatch three points from the Blues. Mousinho’s men come into this game after a win, and we think they could snatch a victory. A bet on Portsmouth is worth 21/10.

Player Bets

Josh Murphy has been electric for Pompey in recent weeks. The winger has eight assists and five goals this season and now faces a trip to his old employers. Murphy has had nine shots on target in his last six games, terrorising fullbacks down the left. We like a bet on Murphy to have a shot on target, worth 4/6 in the soccer betting markets. You can increase those odds to 10/3 by betting on the forward to double that tally.

Pompey have one of the worst disciplinary records in the league, with just one team collecting more yellow cards. They are physical in their press, and their double pivot will not shy away from breaking down attacks with fouls. Bet on Isaac Hayden to receive a card in the game worth 5/2.

Over/Under

12:30 kick-offs are typically lower-scoring affairs. Portsmouth have seen a lot of end-to-end games this season, but Oxford are tough to break down. The U’s also don’t boast a wealth of attacking talent. All of that points towards a quieter day in front of goal. A bet on under 2.5 goals in this game is worth 4/6 for anyone betting on the Championship.

Oxford United vs Portsmouth Head-To-Head and Key Stats

These sides are well acquainted, having faced each other throughout their stint in League One. They are neck and neck with 10 wins each from their previous 20 meetings. Their last clash came on October 5th. The spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw following Louie Sibley’s equaliser.

Oxford keeper Jamie Cumming saved an early penalty from Elias Sorensen, but Portsmouth broke the deadlock just before the hour mark when Mark O’Mahony headed in a Josh Murphy cross. Oxford responded quickly, with Sibley scoring his first goal for the club to level the match. Portsmouth continued to press, with Oxford defenders clearing two efforts off the line, while substitute Siriki Dembele missed a late chance to win it for the hosts, but a draw was a fair result from the two Championship new boys.

Oxford last played on February 11th, heading to Pride Park to face Derby County. It was a bore draw on a chilly Tuesday evening in a match of poor quality. Siriki Dembele forced Derby’s goalkeeper, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, into a save from distance in the first half, while Derby’s Lars-Jorgen Salvesen tested Oxford keeper Jamie Cumming twice after the break.

Marcus Harness wasted Derby’s best chance with a headed miss. The game marked a fourth straight fixture without a win for Oxford, drawing three and losing one with just two goals scored in that time.

Portsmouth secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Cardiff City in their battle for Championship survival in their last game on February 11th. Colby Bishop opened the scoring with a close-range finish in the 10th minute, netting the 50th goal of his Pompey career. Conor Shaughnessy followed up with a header from a corner seven minutes later, both set up by former Cardiff winger Josh Murphy.

Cardiff responded before the break with Callum O’Dowda’s header, but despite sustained pressure, they couldn’t find an equaliser. Portsmouth held firm in the second half, keeping Cardiff to mainly half-chances and long-range shots. The result saw Pompey move up to 18th, four points clear of the relegation zone and five points behind Saturday’s opponents.

Oxford United Team News

Centre backs Elliott Moore, and Ben Nelson will miss this game due to injury, with forward Tom Bradshaw the latest to miss out following an injury received in training last week. Winger Stan Mills made a return off the bench against Derby and will be available for selection here.

  • Predicted lineup: Cumming, Kioso, Helik, Brown, Leigh; Vaulks, Brannagan; Placheta, Matos, Dembele, Harris.

Portsmouth Team News

Regan Poole is nearing a return from injury, but this game will come too soon. Centre back partner Connor Shaughnessy faced another setback when he came off injured in the first half on Tuesday night. Ibane Bowat, Jacob Farrell, and Paddy Lane are all long-term injuries for the Blues and will not appear this season. Potts missed the Cardiff game with a calf issue and is being monitored, but is unlikely to start here. Terry Devlin was excellent off the bench midweek and may find a place in the starting lineup here.

  • Predicted lineup: Schmid, Devlin, Matthews, Atkinson, Ogilvie; Hayden, Dozzell; Ritchie, Lang, Murphy, Bishop.
