Armenia vs Ireland Preview
Ireland travel to Yerevan on September 9th to face Armenia in their second World Cup Qualifier. There was some disappointment after failing to win at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, but Ireland have a chance to bounce back with a victory at the second time of trying.
Portugal dismantled Armenia in their opener and the minnows look set for a tough qualifying campaign. Can Ireland claim the first win of their campaign, or will Armenia stun the Boys in Green?
Armenia vs Ireland Predictions
Score Prediction: Armenia 0-3 Republic of Ireland
One of our best soccer predictions this week is for Ireland to claim their first victory in their World Cup qualifying campaign. The Boys in Green were disappointing on the weekend, clawing back from 0-2 down to salvage a draw against 10-man Hungary. However, they at least showed they have an excellent frontline that can dig itself out of holes. That should not be necessary here against a far weaker Armenian side, and Ireland’s attacking flair can shine through with a win in Yerevan.
Despite that poor performance on Saturday, Ireland’s form still looks strong. Heimir Hallgrímsson’s side is now undefeated in five games (2 W, 3 D). Hallgrimsson’s expansive approach and his squad’s ability to adapt have been very important in that run. Although used to playing slightly more compact, Hallgrimsson will probably instruct his men to dominate possession and pin Armenia’s defence back here. The quality of Ireland’s attacking assets will be the key there.
Evan Ferguson scored his sixth international goal, as did Adam Idah from the bench. Ireland’s strength in depth up top is especially important with Troy Parrott set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The two goalscorers will probably lead the line together on Tuesday. They will stretch Armenia’s defence, allowing space for the other to run into. Add in their aerial presence, and the two will be a constant thorn in the side of Armenia’s defence.
With Ireland’s superior quality across the pitch, greater physicality, and confidence from their five-game unbeaten run, this looks like an excellent opportunity for them to claim three points and build momentum in the group. Hallgrímsson’s side have shown they can dictate play against lower-ranked opposition, and their pressing game should keep Armenia pinned back for long stretches.
Ireland’s biggest edge over Armenia comes in chance creation. Under Heimir Hallgrímsson, Ireland have become a far more proactive attacking side, averaging over 13 shots per game across their last five fixtures and creating multiple high-quality opportunities in each outing. Their ability to work the ball into dangerous areas has been a standout feature of their recent play. Players like Ogbenie and Azaz provide a spark that Armenia do not boast.
By contrast, Armenia struggles to carve out openings consistently, often relying on set-pieces or long-range efforts. Their lack of a reliable creator in midfield has left them predictable going forward. This difference in offensive production means Ireland is far more likely to sustain pressure, generate chances, and eventually find the breakthrough in Yerevan.
Armenia, meanwhile, comes into this game in poor form. They have lost four of their last five fixtures. They have conceded 21 goals in that time. Their backline has been leaky, and against a physical, high-energy Irish attack, they may struggle to cope. The hosts’ game plan will probably be to stick bodies behind the ball and defend their box before getting the ball up the pitch quickly to try to catch Ireland on the break.
Ferguson and Idah both look likely to get on the scoresheet, with their movement and aerial presence giving Ireland multiple routes to goal. Support from midfield runners like Jason Knight and Chiedozie Ogbene only adds to their attacking threat. At the other end, a clean sheet for Ireland’s defence should be within reach, given Armenia’s limited attacking output and lack of cutting edge in the final third. If Ireland can start fast and take control early, this could be a comfortable and morale-boosting win away from home.
Players to Watch
- Evan Ferguson (Striker, Ireland): Evan Ferguson is developing into one of the best Irish strikers. His combination of physical presence, sharp movement, and clinical finishing makes him a nightmare for defenders. Ferguson has shown he can score all types of goals, and that variety makes him so hard to stop. With Adam Idah alongside him, Ferguson should find himself with space to exploit Armenia’s backline. If Ireland can deliver quality service from wide areas, Ferguson will be the man most likely to convert those chances and put the game to bed.
- Tigran Barseghyan (Forward, Armenia): Armenia’s captain and attacking talisman, Barseghyan is the player most likely to trouble Ireland’s defence. Typically deployed on the wing or as a second striker, he is quick, direct, and always looking to cut inside and shoot. His ability to create something out of nothing is crucial for Armenia, who often struggle to produce sustained spells of possession. If Armenia is to find a way through Ireland’s defence, it will probably come from Barseghyan’s pace on the counter-attack or a moment of individual quality. Keeping him quiet will be one of the key tasks for Ireland’s full-backs and holding midfielders.
Armenia vs Ireland Betting Tips
- Full-Time Result – Ireland to win: Ireland are in good form, unbeaten in five, and look to have too much quality for Armenia here. Hallgrimsson’s side should be able to control the game from midfield. With Ferguson and Idah leading the line, Ireland should create more than enough chances to secure three points. Armenia’s recent results have been poor and this looks like a good opportunity for Ireland to build momentum. A bet on Ireland is worth 4/5.
- Over/Under – Over 2.5 Goals: Armenia have conceded two or more in four of their last five matches. We have seen over 2.5 goals in all of Armenia’s previous six games. With Ferguson and Idah both in good scoring form and Armenia vulnerable defensively, this game has a good chance of producing goals. Anyone betting on the over/under should back the over here, worth 21/20 with our online sportsbook.
- Player to Score – Evan Ferguson: Ferguson has two goals in his last three starts for Ireland and is the obvious pick to get on the scoresheet again. His physicality and movement should cause major problems for Armenia’s backline. With Knight and Ogbene providing service, he looks likely to get chances. Ferguson to score anytime is priced at 2/1 for anyone betting on football.
