Terence Crawford to edge massive welterweight encounter with Errol Spence Jr
The battle of the kings of the welterweight division is finally here – although some would say it has come too late.
Spence Jr and Crawford hold all four major championships. The two men boast 67 professional fights between them – all victories, 52 by way of knockout.
The winner of this Las Vegas classic will be crowned as the undisputed chief of the welterweight division and possibly stamp their name in the history books as one of the best ever at 147-pounds.
The stakes could not be any higher. The undisputed championship, the history, the acclaim is there. Yet the truth is that this fight has failed to capture the imagination – or more importantly the attention – of the wider public.
Boxing die-hards will compare this to Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao. Some may say it’s as big as Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns. Yet sadly, Spence Jr against Crawford will likely draw less viewership and less money than the upcoming freak-fight event between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou.
There is, however, a glimmer of hope. Should this weekend’s bout between Spence Jr and Crawford live up to expectations, one of these men could thrust themselves into the mainstream. Question is, who will it be.
Spence Jr arrives in Las Vegas having fought once since his victory over Danny Garcia in December 2020. That one win came in April 2022 when he picked up a TKO victory over Yordenis Ugas.
Crawford’s last outing saw him knock out David Avanesyan in the sixth round – his tenth straight fight which failed to go the distance.
Both men are smart and possess power which can end a fight in an instant. While Spence Jr has the propensity to drop people quicker, Crawford is notorious for breaking down his opponents.
It’s unlikely that one of these men will dominate proceedings in Las Vegas. In fact, it may all come down to who has the most in the tank.
Our recommendation is to back the more experienced Crawford to prevail. While the majority of bookmakers are backing Spence Jr, a fifty-fifty fight like this offers the perfect opportunity to against the odds-makers.
