This year’s festival promises no shortage of drama, with some of the best horses in Europe set to clash across the week. Aidan O’Brien, John and Thady Gosden, and other top trainers all send strong squads. Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Runners
The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1 open to horses aged three and above, run over two miles. This year, the Goodwood Cup has a prize pot of £500,000, with £283,550 going to the winner. The field this year is an exciting mix of impressive four-year-olds, colts, and some established stars.
Illinois leads the betting in this race. A.P. O’Brien’s leading candidate has finished in the top three in all of his starts, including a second-place finish in the St. Leger last year. He is bidding for a first Group 1 success here and is odds-on in some markets. Stablemate Scandinavia isn’t far behind him after winning the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket earlier in July. The colt stormed home to win by 8½L in that race.
John and Thady Gosden also boast several strong entrants, beginning with French Master. He impressed in his win at the Copper Horse Stakes at Royal Ascot and won on this course in May. Sweet William finished runner-up in this race last year and gets a second whack at it. Military Academy returns after his first start of the season here in June, where he finished second. Veteran Trueshan won this race in 2021 and is still impressive over this distance.

Predicted Winner: Illinois
It may be worth backing Illinois with our online sportsbook while he is still at positive odds. Many bookmakers have the four-year-old at odds on following his second behind Trawlerman in the Ascot Gold Cup. This is a Group 1 with far less quality than that race, and he deservedly heads the betting in the biggest race on day one. A bet on O’Brien’s leading charge is worth 6/5.
We also like the place value in Trueshan. The 2021 winner can still turn it on, proving so in his Esher Stakes victory last year. He wasn’t disgraced when he finished fourth in a Group 1 at Longchamp in May, and Hollie Doyle is booked once again. At 40/1, an each-way bet on Alan King’s saddle could be good value.
Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes Runners
The biggest race on day two is the Sussex Stakes. The Duel of the Downs brings together some of the best horses in training every year. Ran over one mile, this race is open to horses aged three and over. This is one of the richest races of the festival with a prize pot totalling over £1m and just under £600,000 going to the winner.
Fields of Gold is the favourite, and it is tough to see anyone get near him in that market. He has been on an upward trajectory since his debut, and this has been a breakout season, winning three of four starts over a mile. He will also get eight pounds from Rosallion. Richard Hannon had a strong season so far, finishing second and third in Group 1s at Ascot and Newbury. Docklands finished first in the former, a nose in front to win the Queen Anne.
Henri Matisse leads the yard for O’Brien in this race with Ryan Moore booked to ride. He won a Group 1 at Longchamp in May before finishing second, 3½L to Fields of Gold in the St. James’s Palace Stakes. Stablemate Serengeti also runs and will probably be a pacemaker for him here.

Predicted Winner: Fields of Gold
One of our most confident horse racing predictions this week is for Fields of Gold to win the Sussex Stakes. He only seems to be getting better, and Rosallion giving eight pounds strengthens his claims even more. However, there is not much value in him for anyone looking at horse racing bets.
Henri Matisse will have a pacemaker in stablemate Serengeti, and that should help him stay ahead of the field. This system saw him take second behind the favourite in the St. James’s Palace Stakes, and we think he can do that once again. While Fields of Gold should win, we like a bet on O’Brien’s leading saddle to finish second in the Sussex Stakes.
Qatar Nassau Stakes Runners
The Qatar Nassau Stakes is one of the feature races of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, a Group 1 contest over 1m2f for fillies and mares aged three and older. With £600,000 in prize money up for grabs and £340,260 going to the winner, it often attracts some of the best middle-distance female performers in Europe. This year’s renewal is no exception, with a fascinating mix of proven Group 1 winners and rapidly improving three-year-olds.
Whirl leads the market and brings top-level form into the race. The filly was an impressive winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes, showing an electric turn of foot to beat a strong field, and finished second in the Oaks. She stays on the same trip here, we are confident she’ll stay once again and confirm her status as the top filly in the division.
See The Fire represents the in-form Andrew Balding yard and brings stamina and class to the table. A proven performer at 1m2f, she’s expected to be right in the mix. Bedtime Story is Aidan O’Brien’s only entry here. She recovered from a disappointing start at Longchamp to finish second in the Prix de Diane Longines. Cercene comes into the race off a huge win in the Coronation Stakes. She’s still relatively unexposed and could outrun her odds with further progress expected over this trip.
Fallen Angel, trained by Karl Burke, is a Group 1 winner with an Irish 1000 Guineas triumph to her name. However, she has been disappointing so far this season and faces a step up in trip here. Running Lion and Dare To Dream round out the field at big prices.
Qatar Nassau Stakes Predictions and Betting Tips
Predicted Winner: Whirl
Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore have won this race four times since 2016 with three-year-old fillies. Whirl holds strong claims, and with that support behind her, she looks primed for a big win here. She was impressive in a narrow second in the Oaks at Epsom, finishing just a neck behind stablemate Minnie Hauk. This trip should be perfect, and she is worth 6/4 to win the Nassau Stakes.
Cercene is our pick of the rest of the runners. She recorded the best run of her young career when winning the Coronation Stakes at 33/1. A step up in trip should not be too much of a worry, and Joseph G Murphy’s saddle looks destined for big things, down two pounds from her last start. A bet on Cercene is worth 6/1.
Coral Stewards’ Cup Runners
The final day of Goodwood’s Qatar Festival plays host to one of the biggest handicap races in the country. The Stewards Cup is highly prestigious and choc-full of talented runners. This sprint takes place over 6f with the winner receiving £128,250.
Elmonjed heads to the Coral Stewards’ Cup as one of the leading market fancies and brings strong handicap form into the race. The colt was an impressive winner of the Sky Bet Dash Handicap last week. Connections are confident he can take the step up in class in his stride, as is the bookie. Hammer The Hammer lines up as a lively second favourite. He was a close second in a handicap at Ascot last time out after completing a hat-trick on his start before. Kevin Ryan’s saddle is 3-2-0 this season.
Completely Random has been steadily progressive this season, winning a double at Southwell and Leicester. He’s relatively unexposed over six furlongs and could have more to come. Double Rush returned to form with two wins and two strong places in his four starts this season, but was a beaten favourite last time out. Get It landed this race in thrilling style last year, bursting through late to score from a wide draw. He’s been lightly campaigned since, but returns fresh and clearly loves the demands of this contest.
Of the wider odds, Sondad and Strong Warrior take the eye. The former has been in excellent form this season. He stays at the same mark of his Ascot handicap place earlier this month. Strong Warrior is unexposed with just four career races. He’s 1-1-1 this season, though his 11th-place finish was blamed on the colt being denied a clear run approximately 2f out.
Coral Stewards’ Cup Predictions and Betting Tips
Predicted Winner: Double Rush
Double Rush is our pick to win the Stewards’ Cup this year. He has looked excellent in his four runs this season. Charles Hills’ saddle is yet to win in two runs, but ran well regardless in second and third place finishes. He is worth 14/1 for anyone betting on Glorious Goodwood and is excellent value for a win or each-way bet.
Sondad is our choice for a value pick here at 20/1. He’s been in great form and is back at the same mark as his place at Ascot. The Easterbys’ trained horse has frequently outrun his odds so far this term and is just two pounds heavier than his last victory. Finally, Strong Warrior is an option, and worth a small wager thanks to his form and lack of exposure.
