The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions kick off their seasons with a blockbuster clash at Lambeau Field. Fans are eagerly anticipating a highly competitive season in the NFC North division. The Packers agonisingly missed out on the playoffs in 2024 despite finishing with an 11-6 record.

Detroit finished with a franchise-best 15-2 record and looked a shoo-in to win the Super Bowl. However, they faded away at the first time of asking in the playoffs. Who will pick up a statement win in Green Bay in week one?

One of our best American football predictions this week is for the Detroit Lions to make a winning start to the season over the Green Bay Packers. Both teams had busy preseasons, with huge roster and staff shakeups. The signing of Micah Parsons has elevated the Packers’ defence to one of the best in the league. Detroit has new defensive and offensive coordinators, as well as a freshened-up offensive line. 

However, this Lions offence will not deviate much from what we saw under their previous regime. They finished with a league-high 33.2 points per game last season, and they can punish the Packers in Wisconsin.

Another storyline leading into this match is the quarterback picture. Jordan Love underwent surgery on his thumb, and the Packers QB will play wearing a brace on his hand. While he is expected to play, Love admitted that his strength would not be near 100% to play in the final preseason game just last week. His inconsistencies are well reported, and any added difficulties through injury could see that offence collapse.

Parsons was a blockbuster addition to the Packers’ defensive line. However, it may have harmed their defence. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark went the other way in that trade, and Green Bay also lost DT T.J. Slaton Jr.. They were key cogs in the run-defence wheel last season. The Lions, who were one of the best rushing outfits in the league last season, will not be scared to run at the Packers, and the exit of two top DTs could welcome pressure onto them.

The Lions’ rushing attack, led by David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, is a nightmare for any team. Gibbs’ versatility as both a rusher and receiver creates mismatches across the field, forcing Green Bay to commit extra bodies to the box or risk giving up chunk plays. Once the Packers stop the run, Goff has proven more than capable of exploiting single coverage. Amon-Ra St. Brown can work the middle of the field. Add in Jameson Williams stretching defences vertically, and this Lions offence is built to create explosive plays on demand.

Defensively, Detroit has built a unit that can complement its high-powered offence. Aidan Hutchinson is a bona fide premier edge rusher in the league. His matchup against a reshuffled Packers offensive line will be pivotal. If Hutchinson and the Lions’ front seven can keep Jordan Love under pressure, it will limit Green Bay’s ability to sustain drives. Expect Detroit to mix in creative blitz packages under their new coordinator, forcing Love to make quick decisions with a less-than-healthy throwing hand.

However, playing at Lambeau Field is never easy. The atmosphere in Green Bay can rattle even veteran quarterbacks. Micah Parsons will be the focal point of Green Bay’s defence. His ability to disrupt both the run and pass game could single-handedly flip momentum if  Detroit doesn’t account for him on every snap. Quay Walker has taken on a leadership role in the middle of the defence and will be key in limiting Jahmyr Gibbs’ production in space. If Green Bay is to win this game, it will come from a vintage display from their defence. 

This game is likely to be competitive deep into the fourth quarter, but the Lions’ ability to dominate on the ground and control time of possession should allow them to dictate tempo. Suppose they can keep the Packers’ offence on the sideline and protect Jared Goff from the occasional Parsons-led pressure. In that case, Detroit has every opportunity to open the season with a statement win.

• Moneyline – Detroit Lions to win: Detroit is a road underdog in this game, and that suits them down to the ground. Dan Campbell’s team was unbeaten away from Ford Field last season and has not lost a road game since December 2023. Furthermore, their record against Green Bay has been excellent in recent years. These sides last met in December 2024. The Lions started fast, pressuring Jordan Love early and jumping out to a 10-0 lead. Green Bay answered with a ground-heavy drive capped by a Josh Jacobs touchdown. However, Dan Campbell’s trademark aggression shone through before halftime. Facing fourth-and-goal from the 2, he kept the offence on the field, and Jared Goff found Jahmyr Gibbs for a touchdown with 11 seconds left, giving Detroit a 17-7 lead at the break.

Momentum swung in the second half. Goff threw a costly interception, and the Packers capitalised, with Jacobs scoring twice to take a 28-24 lead after a failed Lions fourth-down deep in their own territory. Patrick’s touchdown made it 31-28, but Green Bay tied it with a field goal. Goff then engineered a flawless two-minute drill, converting a key fourth down, and Michael Badgley hit the game-winning field goal as time expired, sealing Detroit’s 34-31 win.

Packers Preview

The Packers finished 11-6 in 2024, yet landed third in the competitive NFC North. Frustratingly, that record might have won another division. Jordan Love posted 3,389 passing yards and a combined 26 touchdowns, while reducing turnovers from 13 to 11. Defensively under Jeff Hafley, the Packers ranked among the NFL’s elite. They were fifth in total defence, sixth in opponent points per game, seventh in sacks, and third in interceptions.

Green Bay made waves in the offseason by acquiring Micah Parsons, significantly boosting their pass rush. However, some concerns linger about run defence depth without Kenny Clark. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, Kerby Joseph, and others earned All-Pro honours, with Joseph leading the NFL in interceptions (9). Jahmyr Gibbs tied for the league lead with 16 rushing TDs and set a team record with 20 total touchdowns. However, it ended in disappointment when Detroit was sent crashing out of the playoffs in the divisional round against the bottom seeds, the Washington Commanders.

Detroit has secured key areas with smart free-agent additions. They added cornerback D.J. Reed, DT Roy López, LB Grant Stuard, TE Kenny Yeboah, and QB Kyle Allen. Internal cohesion remains a theme with the team relying on re-signings and low-risk moves. That helped to balance departures like Carlton Davis and Za’Darius Smith. They added depth in the draft with DT Tyleik Williams in the first round.
