Newcastle United will look to arrest a three-game slide when they play host to buoyant Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Newcastle were left feeling regretful after squandering their chances against Liverpool the last time they played at St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe’s side took the lead in the 25th minute, just three minutes before Virgil van Dijk was sent off, but lost out to a Darwin Nunez brace in the final 10 minutes of the match.
A 3-1 loss away to Brighton compounded their woes and means the Toon have lost three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2022.
Most pundits were quick to write Brentford off without top goalscorer Ivan Toney, but Bryan Mbuemo has stepped up with four in four and the Bees look as dangerous as ever on the break.
Thomas Frank’s side finished last season by winning five of six, including against Man City on the final day, and they’re unbeaten so far this term, winning one and drawing three.
The frustration for Frank will be that his side has thrown away more points from winning positions (6) than any other team in the Premier League this season.
It won’t get any easier away to Newcastle. It’s approaching two years since the Geordies lost to someone other than Man City, Liverpool or Arsenal on home turf.
The hope for Brentford is that if anyone is to buck a trend or slay a giant, it seems to be them. They’ve scored 20 times in 15 away matches and have beaten Man City twice in the past year.
It’s hard to go out on a limb and suggest the visitors will win this game, but they certainly have to tools to play their part in an end-to-end, high-scoring thriller.
An away win would mean Newcastle losing four in a row for the first time since January 2021 under Steve Bruce, with Brentford winning three consecutive Premier League away games for the first time in club history.
