Portsmouth vs Leicester Preview

All eyes are on a relegation scrap at Fratton Park on Saturday when Portsmouth FC welcomes Leicester City to the South Coast at 12:30 pm. Pompey are unbeaten in three games and four points clear of the relegation zone. A victory here would put the 2015-16 Premier League champions one step closer to League One.

Leicester have been one of the poorest sides in the league in 2026 despite boasting such a talented squad. They sit five points adrift of safety in 23rd after losing their appeal against a six-point deduction earlier in the campaign. Can they turn their fortunes around when it matters most, or will Pompey pile on the pressure in Hampshire?

Portsmouth FC vs Leicester City Predictions

Score prediction: Pompey 1-0 Leicester

One of our best soccer predictions this week is for Pompey to defeat Leicester and move further clear of the Championship relegation zone. John Mousinho’s Blues have won back-to-back games and enter after possibly their best performance of the season so far after beating 2nd placed Ipswich 2-0 at Fratton Park. Leicester, meanwhile, comes to the South Coast with no wins in five and just two league wins this calendar year.

Pompey have switched their style in recent weeks, which has seen an uptick in performances and results. Mousinho has instructed his men to play more directly, working to get the ball into attacking areas as soon as possible and using set pieces to their advantage. Their ability to find their wingers with a long ball from the back or create overloads before shifting to the opposite wing lets them get forward at pace before delivering balls into the box.

Both of those scenarios saw them score twice against Ipswich. Pompey will soak up pressure at the back before breaking fast against Leicester. They have the most accurate long balls per match this season, with 26.2. Leicester have one of the worst defensive set-piece records in the league. Mousinho’s direct tactics can undo the Foxes.

Pompey’s defence has been one of the bright spots of their season, despite their standing in the league. They have the 6th-best xG conceded in the league and are very tough to break down, especially at home. Leicester have struggled to convert chances in recent weeks. Gary Rowett’s team went goalless at home against Swansea last weekend and managed only one against Sheffield Wednesday, despite the Owls having the league’s worst defensive record. With a raucous home crowd on their backs, Leicester will struggle to find clear-cut chances.

However, the Foxes cannot be underestimated. Despite their poor form this season, there is no denying the talent within their squad. Players like Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi bring flair in attack. Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp are a midfield double pivot that is arguably Premier League quality on paper.

The problem is, we simply have not seen them perform that way together this season. Moments of individual excellence have not been enough to win games. If something clicks, and those players perform as a team, Portsmouth are in trouble. But recent history indicates that this will not be the case. Leicester have been disjointed all season, and a relegation clash at Fratton Park is the last place to expect it all to come together.

Expect Portsmouth to defend compactly rather than dominate possession. They are excellent at winning the ball back in the final third. That is where they are most dangerous; snatching possession and breaking directly and at pace. The return of Ebou Adams will boost their midfield, giving them more legs and another ball-winner.

Leicester, by contrast, are likely to see more of the ball but may struggle to turn that possession into meaningful chances. Their recent matches have shown a lack of cohesion in the final third, with attacks often breaking down before they can truly test the opposition defence. While they have the technical quality to control phases of the game, their inability to sustain pressure and convert opportunities has been a recurring issue.

Ultimately, this feels like a game that will be decided by efficiency rather than dominance. Portsmouth arrive with a clear attacking ethos. If they can execute that direct style and capitalise on Leicester’s weakness at set pieces, they will find plenty of routes to goal. Fratton Park is a horrible place to go, especially in these circumstances. Leicester have lacked the character to handle this kind of high-pressure, physical contest this season. Everything points towards the hosts being better equipped for this type of encounter.

Portsmouth FC vs Leicester City Betting Tips

  • Player to Score or Assist – Adrian Segecic: Adrian Segecic is having an excellent debut season in English football. The 21-year-old has nine goals and assists in the Championship this season and is on corners for the Blues. He assisted Shaughnessy’s opener against Ipswich on Tuesday night. Portsmouth’s focus on getting the ball to their wide players means Segecic will see plenty of it on the left. Back the Croatian U21 to get himself up to double figures on Saturday, worth 7/5 for anyone betting on soccer.
  • Full Time Result – Portsmouth to win: Pompey are favourites to win this game with our online sportsbook, and we are backing them to make it three on the trot. They come into this one full of confidence after back-to-back wins, including an impressive result against Ipswich. Their recent tactical shift has made them far more effective in both boxes. With a clear game plan, strong home support at Fratton Park, and a resolute defensive setup that is difficult to break down, they look well-equipped to deal with a Leicester side lacking cohesion and form. Bet on Portsmouth to win, worth 13/10.
  • Cards – Both teams to receive 2+ cards: This is the most important game of the season for both teams. Anything less than a win for Leicester drastically increases their chances of relegation. A win for Pompey would effectively secure their position in the Championship. That means we are set for an incredibly competitive fixture full of fire. Pompey have received two or more cards in all of their previous six games. Leicester have 10 in six. Anyone betting on the EFL Championship can back each team to receive 2+ cards at 6/5.

Pompey vs Leicester Championship Bet Builder

Who doesn’t love a bet builder? That is why we have picked out a 9/1 bet builder for this match. It combines strong trends from both sides with key player markets that stand out based on recent form. In a game expected to be tight but competitive, this selection offers excellent value.

  • Andre Dozzell to be carded (13/5): Dozzell has 8 yellows this season and often commits tactical fouls to stop counterattacks.
  • Abdul Fatawu 2+ shots (8/15): Fatawu is averaging over 3 shots per game in his previous five and had two shots on target when these sides met in October.
  • Under 2.5 goals (8/11): Both teams average barely over 1 goal per game this season, and this bet has landed in their previous four meetings.

Portsmouth FC vs Leicester City Head-to-Head and Key Stats

These sides met in October last year, seeing out a tense 1-1 contest at the King Power Stadium. Leicester started strongly and took the lead midway through the first half, with Aaron Ramsey finishing from close range after good work down the right. The hosts dominated much of the opening period, creating several chances but failing to extend their advantage.

Portsmouth improved after the break and found their equaliser just before the hour mark. John Swift finished a quick attacking move to bring the visitors level. Leicester continued to see more of the ball and created the better chances overall, but were unable to find a winner despite their pressure. That continued a trend of 1-1 draws between the two, stretching back to 2011.

Leicester started the season strongly and looked destined for at least a place in the playoffs. However, faltering form, mixed with a points deduction, has left them staring down the barrel of relegation. The Foxes sit 23rd, five points from safety. Gary Rowett’s side enters this game with just two wins in their last 18 league matches. That run highlights the scale of their decline, with confidence clearly fragile and consistency nowhere to be found.

Portsmouth are trending in the opposite direction at a crucial time in the season. They have been in and around the relegation scrap for most of the season. However, they are now undefeated in three games, winning two and drawing one. Those wins came against teams placed in 2nd and 4th, a trend that has followed them throughout the year. They boast a 5-2-2 record in nine games against the top 5 teams in the league. That underlines their ability to rise to the occasion against stronger opposition, particularly when their game plan is clear and executed effectively.
