Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal Preview

Bo Nickal and Reinier de Ridder meet in a middleweight clash with the potential to be a show stealer on May 3rd. Nickal is undefeated in his MMA career, while de Ridder has already made a splash in the UFC since he arrived in late 2024.

For the first time in his short career, there are some question marks around Nickal’s readiness for top 15 opponents after his performance last time out. Will he prove once and for all that he is the real deal, or will de Ridder stop this hype train on his way to becoming a title contender?

Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal Predictions

Fight outcome: Renier de Ridder via decision

One of our best MMA predictions this week is for Reinier de Ridder to cause a big upset in Iowa this weekend. RDR is Nickal’s most dangerous opponent yet. Nickal has been on a tear since appearing on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022. However, he showed some deficiencies in his previous bout against a less talented fighter. This fight is far closer than the odds indicate. It could go either way, but we are swaying towards the Dutchman here.

This fight probably hinges on who initiates the grappling exchanges. This is a classic grappler vs wrestler matchup. Both fighters are excellent on the ground, but in different disciplines. However, Nickal barely initiated any grappling exchanges with Paul Craig in his last fight, likely down to Craig’s submission acumen. Reinier de Ridder is just as good, maybe even better. Additionally, his striking is a lot better than Craig’s. While Nickal may have a slight edge there, he puts himself in significantly more danger by keeping things standing than he did against Craig.

We expect de Ridder to initiate the grappling exchanges and put pressure on Nickal. Bo is an elite-level wrestler, but we have never seen anyone attempt a takedown on him like RDR probably will. His hesitance to get involved in any ground exchanges with Paul Craig tells us he is not confident in his submission defence. De Ridder will take full advantage of that. He will close the distance and look for takedowns in the clinch. He has more experience and has fought and beaten high-level fighters. We think the Dutchman will be more active than Nickal, which will see him steal rounds from the judges.

However, that is not to say Nickal has not learned since that performance. Part of what makes this fight hard to predict is that we don’t know what we will see from the American. A repeat of his last performance probably means he loses, but his ascendancy has been so fast that he could already plausibly be twice the fighter he was since then.

Nickal must be more active on the ground than in his last fight. That shouldn’t be difficult, given he made no takedown attempts. However, De Ridder will not stand and wait for Nickal like Craig did. The Dutchman put him under pressure. There is no doubt that the American can take de Ridder down, but what happens after that makes it tricky. Entering RDR’s guard is dangerous. If Nickal can maintain top position, he can rain down heavy punches to finish his opponent. That is his path to victory, and he has to be bolder in this contest than in his last.

This fight is very tough to predict without knowing which version of Bo Nickal we are going to get. If he is at the top of his game on the ground and initiates de Ridder, he could maul the Dutchman on the way to his eighth consecutive victory. However, without seeing that from him against a top 15 fighter, we can only go off what he has achieved so far. De Ridder is a big step up in competition. We believe he has what it takes to stop this hype train.

Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal Fight Outcome

Reinier de Ridder’s strategy revolves around closing distance, clinching, and imposing his superior grappling to control and submit opponents. He has expressed a desire to make this bout a wrestling match, aiming to test Nickal’s grappling under pressure. He will use those clinches to neutralise Nickal’s wrestling. De Ridder’s submission game is his most dangerous weapon, boasting 13 submission victories in his career.

Nickal’s performance against Paul Craig raised questions about his approach, as he opted for a more cautious strategy rather than fully engaging in wrestling exchanges. He feared Craig’s submission prowess, and de Ridder is probably even better in that area. Nickal’s path to victory lies in dictating the pace with his wrestling, aiming to impose his will early in the fight. He has to be more aggressive, but whether he will remains to be seen.

Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal Betting Tips

  • Fight Winner – Renier de Ridder to win: Reinier de Ridder is the underdog with our online betting site, but we are backing him to cause the upset. He is a better fighter than Bo Nickal’s last opponent and looks like he has all the skills the American finds difficult to deal with. Bet on de Ridder to win this fight, which is worth 12/5.
  • Over / Under – Over 2.5 Rounds: The over / under betting line is 2.5 rounds for this bout. Fights between grapplers are often chess matches, and we expect the same from this fight. The two may take the opening round to feel each other out and test the water before settling into the matchup. We like a bet on over 2.5 rounds, worth 20/21 for anyone betting on the UFC.
  • Either Fighter To Win Via Submission: Both of these fighters are excellent grapplers. Nickal has won four of his previous six fights via submission. Reinier de Ridder has tapped out 13 opponents in 19 victories. If this fight sees a finish, it will almost certainly come via submission. Either fighter to win via submission is worth 11/4 in the MMA betting.
