9. Cesar Azpilicueta
César Azpilicueta became one of the most dependable defenders in Chelsea history after arriving from Marseille in 2012. What initially looked like a relatively modest signing quickly proved to be one of the best pieces of business of the Roman Abramovich era. The Spaniard spent more than a decade at Stamford Bridge and became one of the club’s most respected leaders.
Azpilicueta was not the most naturally gifted defender on this list, but few could match his consistency and professionalism. He could play at full-back or centre-back and was equally comfortable defending deep or pushing forward. His reading of the game and willingness to put his body on the line made him a hugely popular figure with supporters.
As captain, Azpilicueta lifted the Champions League trophy in 2021 after Chelsea defeated Manchester City in Porto. He also won two Europa League titles, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup during his Chelsea career. 8. Ron Harris
Ron Harris is one of the most important players in Chelsea’s early history. He remains the club’s all-time appearance record holder. Nicknamed “Chopper”, the defender made an extraordinary 795 appearances for Chelsea between 1961 and 1980, establishing himself as the heart of the club’s defence during one of its most formative periods.
Harris was a tough, uncompromising defender who became renowned for his aggressive tackling and immense physical strength. 7. Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard is arguably the most gifted player to wear a Chelsea shirt. The Belgian forward joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 and immediately became one of the most important players. As the trophies stacked up, it became clear that Hazard was one of the best left wingers in the world and maybe even the best player in the league.
Hazard was a tricky, agile, and direct winger who revelled in skipping past defenders with the ball at his feet. 6. Peter Osgood
