Tyrone vs Cavan Preview

Tyrone will host Cavan in a finely-balanced Group 1 tie this weekend on Sunday, June 15th at O’Neill’s Healy Park in Omagh. It’s going to be a fascinating clash between the Red Hand County and the Breffni Blues. Earlier this season, most people would have expected Tyrone to run away with this game. But Cavan will represent a stern test and have ambitions of making it through a hard-fought group.

There’s plenty on the line for both teams in this game, with both sides able to qualify for the knockout stages. They have served up some classics over the years, so fans will be expecting more of the same. Tyrone will enter this All-Ireland Senior Football Championship fixture as an early favourite. However, they know that Cavan represents a dangerous foe who can beat anyone on their day.

Tyrone vs Cavan Predictions

Predicted Score: Tyrone 1-20 – 0-15 Cavan

Tyrone is the current favourite on our sports betting platform. We agree with this assessment because they are a more consistent side than Cavan. However, this is what makes the Breffni Blues so dangerous. They have less depth than Tyrone, but they’re capable of delivering an outstanding performance when at their best. Nonetheless, our GAA predictions indicate that Tyrone will win this SFC match.

Malachy O’Rourke has turned his side around after their relegation from Division 1 earlier this year. Now they look like one of the strongest teams in the country. This will depend on certain things going their way, and they’re desperate for Brian Kennedy to return from injury. They badly missed the powerful midfielder against Mayo because he plays a crucial role in securing the ball from Niall Morgan’s long kickouts. Tyrone conceded possession too many times against Mayo, and they can’t afford to be so wasteful in this match.

Cavan has some big men in the centre of the field and can use this to their advantage. The likes of Killian ‘Gunner’ Brady and Padraig Faulkner are powerful and gritty presences for the Lake County men. They can make life difficult for Tyrone if the Red Hands try to be too slick and play through them. They also have tremendous heart, as we saw in their last meeting when they came roaring back from a gaping deficit.

We believe Tyrone offers more of a scoring threat than Cavan. Ruairí Canavan is the latest off his family’s production line and is capable of a match-winning performance. His older brother, Darragh, is emerging as one of the best forwards in the country alongside Cathal McShane. It’s going to be tough for Cavan to keep them quiet. However, it’s not impossible, as Mayo proved in their last match.

Nonetheless, only a fool would rule Cavan out of contention. Cormac O’Reilly was clinical against Mayo and will be chomping at the bit ahead of this one. The talented forward is forging an effective partnership with the veteran Gearoid McKiernan. McKiernan returned from retirement in 2025 and is excellent at scoring two-pointers. We predict this will be a tactic for Cavan in this match as they try to keep in touch with Tyrone.

These are two very different teams with contrasting styles. O’Rourke has helped Tyrone recapture its identity in the last few games. They’re playing with attacking flair and dynamism. We believe that they will continue to improve and that Cavan could be a casualty of this. Nonetheless, the Breffni Blues are one of the fittest teams in the country under Raymond Galligan, who has a strong focus on strength and conditioning. If they lose, it won’t be because they’re not trying!

Players To Watch

  • Niall Morgan (Goalkeeper, Tyrone): A two-time All-Star (2021 and 2024), Morgan is arguably the best goalkeeper in the country right now. However, it’s not just his shot-stopping that made him an All-Star. His kickouts are one of the most important weapons in Tyrone’s arsenal. The Edendork St. Malachy’s star is effectively a playmaker for his team. Some opponents are catching onto this, so it remains to be seen how effective this strategy will be or if Morgan mixes it up against Cavan. Brian Kennedy’s return could be a decisive factor.
  • Cormac O’Reilly(Forward, Cavan): O’Reilly has been one of Cavan’s standout players in this campaign. He delivered impressive performances in noteworthy wins over Roscommon and Donegal this season. Cavan will depend on his clinical kicking because he’s one of the best natural scorers on this side. They’re likely to need at least one goal to win this match, and we think that O’Reilly will secure it for his side.

Tyrone vs Cavan Betting Tips

  • Full-Time Result – Cavan to win outright: Cavan is a justifiable underdog because they’ve got a rotten record against Tyrone. However, this is a different edition of this team, and it doesn’t do them justice to compare them to past iterations. A bet on Cavan to win this game outright is worth 6/1, which seems crazy to us. We favour Tyrone, but these odds are too good to ignore. A winning €10 stake would make a massive €60 profit. We expect these odds to move closer.
  • Future Bet – Tyrone to win All-Ireland Championship: It doesn’t make sense to back Tyrone to beat Cavan at only 2/15. An alternative way to bet on Tyrone is to pick them to lift the Sam Maguire in 2025. Many analysts regard them as dark horses because they’re behind favourites like Kerry, Armagh, and Dublin. It’s 9/1 for them to win the All-Ireland this year, so this is a good time to have a punt.
  • Over-Under 44.5 points – This will be a hard-fought game, and Cavan will make life difficult for Tyrone. That’s why we predict this fixture won’t be too high-scoring, so an over-under bet is a good option. If Cavan’s defence can stay resolute, they may hold Tyrone back and limit their scoring opportunities. Two-pointers could swing the balance here, but we think that under 44.5 points is a good pick.
  • Second-half Winner – Cavan: Anyone betting on Gaelic football this year will know Cavan is a relentless machine under Raymond Galligan. They may lose because another team has more quality than they do. However, it’s never because they stop trying or get tired. We’ve seen them mount impressive comebacks against Tyrone in recent history. Meanwhile, their outstanding fitness levels mean that they’re always a dangerous threat. It’s a long shot, but picking them to win the second half could be a good choice!
  • Live Betting: Don’t forget to check out the live betting odds throughout this game. A single GAA black card or injury could change everything. We already saw how the loss of Brian Kennedy seriously impacted Tyrone, so it’s crucial to watch.

Tyrone vs Cavan Head-to-Head and Key Stats

Cavan fans won’t like this, but they have a terrible record against Tyrone. They haven’t won any of their last five games against the Red Hand County. Their most recent positive result was a draw in 2016 when they held Tyrone to a 0-16 – 3-7 result in the Ulster semifinal. However, they lost the following replay.

Cavan’s last five games Venue Score Result
Cavan vs Donegal Kingspan Breffni, Cavan 1‑13 – 3‑26  Loss
Mayo vs Cavan MacHale Park, Castlebar 1-17 – 1-14 Win
Tyrone vs Cavan O’Neill’s Healy Park, Omagh 0‑20 – 1‑24 Loss
Cavan vs Cork Kingspan Breffni, Cavan 0‑19 – 0‑21 Loss
Cavan vs Down Kingspan Breffni, Cavan 1‑20 – 1‑18  Win

Their most recent meeting saw Tyrone win 1-24 to 0-20 in Omagh in April 2025. Tyrone led by 13 points at one stage and ultimately won by seven points. Cavan unleashed a volley of two-pointers to narrow the gap, but the damage was already done. Conn Kilpatrick’s late goal ensured that Tyrone cruised across the line. It also meant that it had been 42 years since Cavan last defeated Tyrone in the Ulster Championship.

Cavan’s last game in Group 1 saw them suffer a heavy loss against Donegal. Tir Chonaill won 3-26 to 1-13 as they inflicted pain on the Breffni Blues. This was a very disappointing result for Cavan because they stunned the country with a victory over Mayo. However, they didn’t turn up for this match and they paid a big price for it. Donegal scored 1-5 on each side of the break as Cavan wilted in front of them. Speaking of Donegal, both Cavan and Tyrone will be watching Tir Chonaill’s game against Mayo with interest.

Tyrone’s last five games Venue Score Result
Tyrone vs Mayo Healy Park, Omagh 1‑13 – 2‑17 Loss
Donegal vs Tyrone Páirc Seán MacCumhaill, Ballybofey 2‑17 – 0‑20 Win
Tyrone vs Armagh St Tiernach’s Park, Clones 0‑22 – 0‑23 Loss
Tyrone vs Cavan Healy Park, Omagh 1-24 – 0-20 Win
Tyrone vs Dublin Healy Park, Omagh 2-20 – 1-16 Win

Mayo blew this group wide open when they beat Tyrone in their last game in the Senior Football Championship. This game was after O’Rourke’s side defeated Donegal in their opener. A defiant Mayo beat Tyrone 2-17 to 1-13 in Omagh. Their loss to Cavan meant that most people expected Tyrone to turn Mayo over, so this was a major shock. Mayo pressed hard on Niall Morgan’s kickouts with great success. Tyrone must sort this out or their championship could come to an early and unexpected end.
