Commanders vs Eagles Preview
The Philadelphia Eagles begin the new campaign hosting the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday. Philly were sent crashing out of the playoffs early last season and enter 2026 with a point to prove.
Washington have licked their wounds after a poor campaign last year, where they finished 5-12. Can they improve and lay down a marker with an upset in week one, or will the Eagles bounce back from playoff disappointment at home?
Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles Predictions
Score prediction: Commanders 20-30 Eagles
One of our best NFL predictions this week is for the Philadelphia Eagles to defeat the Washington Commanders and start their season with a victory on Sunday night. The strength of the Eagles’ offence is undeniable. Philadelphia converted 70.5% of their red-zone possessions into touchdowns last season. That efficiency gives quarterback Jalen Hurts and co a significant advantage against a Washington defence that allowed touchdowns on 67.7% of opponents’ red-zone trips in 2025.
Hurts should be central to the Eagles’ success. The quarterback has the ability to hurt Washington both through the air and on the ground. Philadelphia can also lean heavily on Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 1,140 yards last season. That combination gives the Eagles multiple ways to attack a Commanders defence that could struggle to consistently get off the field.
Philadelphia’s receiving options should create further problems. DeVonta Smith topped 1,000 receiving yards last season and gives Hurts a reliable target capable of making plays downfield. If Washington focuses too heavily on stopping Barkley or containing Hurts outside the pocket, Smith and the Eagles’ other receivers should have opportunities to exploit one-on-one coverage.
SAQUON BARKLEY IS NOT OF THIS WORLD.

Washington does have enough offensive talent to make this a competitive divisional game. Jayden Daniels remains one of the most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFC, while the arrival of Stefon Diggs gives the Commanders another proven receiving option alongside Terry McLaurin. Diggs recorded 1,013 receiving yards last season, adding another dimension to Washington’s passing attack.
However, concerns surround the Commanders heading into the opener. Washington finished 5-12 last season and enters this matchup with questions surrounding its offensive line. Five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil is set to miss the game after suffering a triceps injury. Other offensive-line absences have created additional concerns about the protection in front of Daniels.
That could be particularly damaging against Philadelphia. The Eagles should be able to apply pressure without committing excessive resources to stopping Washington’s passing game. If Daniels is forced into difficult situations on a third down, Philadelphia’s defence can dictate the tempo and create opportunities for turnovers.

Philadelphia enters the matchup as a clear favourite, with the Eagles lined up at -4.5 for anyone betting on the handicap and 7/20 on the moneyline. Home advantage is certainly playing a factor, as any sports fan would take opening the season in front of a home crowd. Washington will not fancy their chances against one of the NFC’s stronger teams immediately. Philadelphia also finished 11-6 last season and won the NFC East.
We expect Washington to have some success, particularly through Daniels’ mobility and its improved receiving corps. However, Philadelphia has more balance, greater proven production and a substantial advantage in the red zone. Hurts and Barkley should lead the offence, while the Eagles’ defence can exploit Washington’s weakened offensive line.
Our prediction is for the Philadelphia Eagles to win 30-20. A ten-point winning margin is the most likely scoreline as the Eagles’ offensive efficiency and home advantage should ultimately prove decisive. The Commanders enter with a depleted offensive line, and they will struggle to keep up as the Eagles pull away.
Washington Commanders @ Philadelphia Eagles Betting Tips
- Handicap – Eagles – 4.5: The Eagles should have enough offensive firepower to cover the -4.5 spread at home. Washington’s defence was one of the NFL’s weakest last season, finishing 30th against the run and allowing 2,411 rushing yards at 4.8 yards per carry. That is a particularly concerning matchup against Saquon Barkley and an Eagles rushing attack that can also use Jalen Hurts as a runner. Philadelphia should be able to move the ball consistently, while Washington’s offensive line has become a major concern following the loss of Laremy Tunsil. We expect the Eagles to control the game and eventually pull clear, making Eagles -4.5 our preferred selection for anyone betting on Philadelphia this weekend.
- Total – Eagles over 27.5 points: Philadelphia has the potential to put up a big total against a Washington defence that conceded 26.5 points per game last season. Their poor run defence could allow Barkley and the Eagles’ rushing attack to consistently move the chains. If Philadelphia establishes the run early, it should create favourable passing opportunities for Hurts and DeVonta Smith. Washington’s offensive problems could also give the Eagles extra possessions if they struggle to sustain drives. With Philadelphia possessing one of the league’s most efficient red-zone offences, Eagles over 27.5 points looks like an attractive selection with our online sportsbook.
- Player Prop – Saquon Barkley over 77.5 rushing yards: This is our best pick for anyone betting on the NFL. Barkley looks capable of taking advantage of a Washington run defence that ranked near the bottom of the NFL last season. That weakness could be exploited from the opening drive, especially if Philadelphia establishes the run and controls possession. Barkley rushed for 1,140 yards last season and should receive plenty of opportunities if the Eagles play from ahead. Washington’s defensive struggles against the run make Barkley over 77.5 rushing yards one of our favourite player-prop bets.
- Player Prop – Jayden Daniels over 29.5 passing attempts: Daniels could be forced into a high-volume passing performance if our prediction of an Eagles victory comes true. Washington’s offensive line enters the season with significant questions after Laremy Tunsil suffered a triceps injury. The Commanders have also had to shuffle the group during training camp. If Philadelphia establishes an early lead, Washington may have little choice but to move away from the run and ask Daniels to throw more frequently. His mobility remains a major weapon, but a negative game script should increase his passing workload. Daniels over 29.5 passing attempts therefore appeals as a strong volume-based prop.
Washington Commanders vs Philadelphia Eagles Head-to-Head and Key Stats
These NFC East rivals last met in January 2026, with Washington beating Philadelphia 24-17 in the final game of the regular season. However, the result requires plenty of context. The Eagles had already secured their playoff position and rested several key starters.
Washington led 10-7 at halftime. Philadelphia moved ahead 17-10 in the third quarter, but the Commanders rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to complete the comeback. The victory gave Washington a regular-season sweep in 2025, although the circumstances make it difficult to use that result as a straightforward indicator of the teams’ respective strengths.
Commanders Preview
The Commanders endured a difficult 2025 campaign, finishing 5-12 after showing significant promise the previous season. Jayden Daniels remains the focal point of the offence, with his dual-threat ability allowing him to make plays both as a passer and runner. The addition of Stefon Diggs gives Daniels another proven receiving option alongside Terry McLaurin.
However, the Commanders have concerns along the offensive line, particularly with Laremy Tunsil unavailable. That could leave Daniels under pressure against an Eagles defensive front capable of generating consistent pressure. Washington also struggled badly against the run last season, ranking 30th after allowing 2,411 rushing yards. That weakness could be exposed by Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts.
If Philadelphia establishes an early lead, Washington may be forced to abandon the run and rely heavily on Daniels’ arm. That could make it difficult for the Commanders to stay competitive for four quarters.
Eagles Preview
Philadelphia enters the season among the NFC’s leading contenders after finishing 11-6 in 2025. The Eagles possess one of the league’s most balanced offences. They are led by Jalen Hurts at quarterback and Saquon Barkley in the backfield. Hurts’ ability to make plays with both his arm and legs creates problems for opposing defences. Barkley’s physical running style gives Philadelphia an effective way to control possession.
The Eagles also have plenty of quality in the passing game, with DeVonta Smith providing Hurts with a reliable downfield target. Their red-zone efficiency was particularly impressive last season, converting 70.5% of opportunities into touchdowns.
Defensively, Philadelphia has the personnel to make life uncomfortable for Daniels, particularly if the Eagles can exploit Washington’s offensive-line concerns. The combination of a strong pass rush and home advantage should help Philadelphia control the tempo. With greater balance and fewer obvious weaknesses, the Eagles look well positioned to start the season with a divisional victory.
