Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Preview
Manchester City begin their 2025/26 Premier League campaign with a visit to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium on August 16th. Pep Guardiola is hungry to right the wrongs of last season after his first trophyless campaign since 2017.
Wolves escaped relegation last season, but have been riding their luck in recent years. Can they get off to a flyer at home, or will City make a statement of intent with a victory in the West Midlands?
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Predictions
Score Prediction: Wolves 0-2 Man City
One of our best soccer predictions this week is for Manchester City to get off to winning ways in their season opener at Molineux. Pep Guardiola’s side underachieved last season and is on a mission to make it right. Wolves have flirted with relegation for several seasons, amidst growing financial strain and tension between their head coaches and board. They are expected to be among the pack fighting to stay in the league once again this season and have been handed a huge challenge in their first game of the campaign.
City surprised everyone last season for all the wrong reasons. Inconsistency reared its ugly head across all competitions, indicating the need for a clear-out of the old guard in the summer. Captain Kevin de Bruyne was released following the end of his contract, Kyle Walker has been shipped off to Burnley, and Jack Grealish recently signed for Everton on loan. They have filled their squad with quality in response, and those new faces will be keen to impress on their league debuts.
Rayan Cherki may be the pick of the bunch. He joined from Lyon in the summer and is regarded as one of the best young talents in world football. The Frenchman was excellent during the Club World Cup, and he can cause serious problems for this Wolves defence. Only the three relegated teams had a worse defensive record than Vitor Pereira’s side last season. Cherki thrives when running at fullbacks, and Wolves’ backline will be ripe for the taking.
There is too much quality all along City’s attack. Erling Haaland goes without saying, and Omar Marmoush hit the ground running when joining the eight-time Premier League champions in January. A revitalised Manchester City side will dominate possession and unleash the likes of Cherki, Marmoush, and Phil Foden on this Wolves defence. Pep will allow them more freedom to run, stretch the back line, and create scoring opportunities.
While Wolves should not be underestimated, it is hard to be optimistic when looking at their preseason. They didn’t win a game all summer. The transfer of Matheus Cunha to Manchester United had clearly hampered them, as they struggled to put away chances. The blue side of Manchester also pinched one of their star players with Rayan Ait-Nouri moving to City for €36.8m. Wolves’ summer reinforcements have not impressed during preseason, and this is as hard a fixture as any for them to begin finding form.
Their best chance at getting a result here is to frustrate City early, sit deep in a compact shape, and hope to nick a goal on the counter. They will need goalkeeper José Sá to be at his very best, and any set-piece opportunities must be taken with ruthless efficiency. However, over the course of 90 minutes, City’s superior depth, movement, and technical quality are likely to wear them down. Expect Wolves to battle hard, but Manchester City’s renewed hunger and attacking firepower should see them start their title challenge with a convincing victory.
Players to Watch
- Jørgen Strand Larsen (Striker, Wolves): Jørgen Strand Larsen was a bright spark in Wolves’ underwhelming season last year. The Norwegian scored 14 goals in 35 league games and signed on a permanent deal this summer. The 6’4” striker will be integral to the host’s game plan here. Wolves’ attacking moves will be limited, so Larsen will be in charge of snatching balls in the air and knocking them down to his teammates, as well as being an aerial threat from set pieces. He must make the most of whatever chances are available, as there won’t be many.
- Rayan Cherki (Forward, Man City): Rayan Cherki is one of the most exciting young talents in the world. He thrives in one-on-one situations, combining speed, fast feet and impeccable skill to run at defenders. The Frenchman will isolate Wolves’ fullbacks and skip past them to carve out scoring opportunities for himself or deliver quality balls in for his teammates, specifically Erling Haaland. Cherki will be licking his lips at the prospect of playing one of the weakest defences in the league and has a huge chance to impress on his debut.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Betting Tips
- Full-Time Result – Manchester City to win: Manchester City should win this at a canter, given the gap in quality between these sides. They won both fixtures last season, and enter with a stronger squad, including one of Wolves’ top performers from 24/25 to boot. The hosts had a disappointing preseason, and City should win this with few difficulties. A bet on Man City to win is worth 1/2.
- Player Card – Joao Gomes to be yellow carded: Joao Gomes is one of Wolves’ best and most physical players. The midfielder is not afraid of a scuffle and will be in charge of contributing to transitions as well as chasing down forwards. He will be the enforcer in the middle and may cut off attacks with tactical fouls. The Brazilian was carded in this fixture last year, and we can see a repeat here. A bet on Gomes to receive a yellow card is worth 12/5 for anyone betting on the Premier League.
- Both Teams To Score – No: Matheus Cunha’s exit has seriously weakened this Wolves attack. He was their top scorer last season with 15 goals. Furthermore, City has one of the best left-backs in the world. Wolves’ attacking moves will be limited, with City expected to dominate possession. The visitors should keep the hosts out for 90 minutes and begin their season with a clean sheet victory. A wager against both teams scoring is worth 10/11 for anyone betting on football.
Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City Head-To-Head and Key Stats
These sides last met in May, towards the end of the season. Manchester City moved up to third in the Premier League with a 1-0 home win over Wolves. Kevin De Bruyne scored the only goal in the 36th minute, converting Jeremy Doku’s cutback for his fourth league goal of the season. Wolves, who had won their previous six league matches, created several chances and hit the woodwork twice through Rayan Aït-Nouri and Matheus Cunha.

City controlled possession but found opportunities limited against a well-organised Wolves defence. Josko Gvardiol made a crucial goal-line clearance, while Matheus Nunes prevented another Wolves opening early in the second half. VAR reviewed and rejected a potential red card for Aït-Nouri after a foul on Bernardo Silva. The victory was City’s fourth consecutive league win, and their second of the season against Wolves.

Man City had a busy summer, playing in the Club World Cup after the culmination of the Premier League. City’s summer has been one of transition. The departure of Kevin De Bruyne after a decade leaves a creative void, while Jack Grealish’s loan to Everton signals a changing of the guard.
In response, Pep Guardiola has brought in Rayan Cherki from Lyon, AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders, and Wolves’ Rayan Aït-Nouri, alongside young Norwegian talent Sverre Nypan. The squad also now boasts greater depth in goal with James Trafford returning from Burnley and Marcus Bettinelli arriving from Chelsea.
Their biggest preseason action came at the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, where they breezed through the group with big wins over Wydad AC, Al Ain, and Juventus, only to be stunned 4-3 after extra time by Al-Hilal in the Round of 16.
Despite that setback, City still looks formidable. With further links to Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, the reigning champions could yet get even stronger. Another title challenge is not just expected: it’s demanded.
Wolves Recent Form

In sharp contrast to their rivals, Wolverhampton Wanderers endured a dismal preseason, failing to win a single friendly. That was highlighted by a lacklustre performance in their final warm-up, a loss to Celta Vigo. Even newly-signed winger Fer López couldn’t spark momentum.
Off the pitch, Wolves’ summer has been busier than their results suggest. The club parted ways with several key players: Matheus Cunha (€74.20 m to Manchester United), Rayan Aït-Nouri (to Manchester City), Pablo Sarabia and Nelson Semedo on free transfers, among others.
In came new faces to fill the void: Fer López and Jørgen Strand Larsen (permanent after a successful loan), Jhon Arias from Fluminense, and David Møller Wolfe from AZ. Financially, the club generated over €100m from transfers and reinvested approximately €80m.
However, despite some good business, there is still worry for the season ahead. Wolves have escaped relegation for the last few seasons with decent form towards the backend of their campaigns. But how much longer can they get away with inconsistency?
