Women’s Wimbledon Finals

Vonrousova vs Jabeur

The Wimbledon women’s singles final is set with plenty of twists and turns in the tail that got us here.

Ons Jabeur returns to the big dance for the second year in a row but her appearance in the championship match is still a bit of a surprise.

Even more of a surprise is the appearance of Marketa Vondrousova after the 2019 French Open runner-up stunned Elina Svitolina in the last four having ousted world No 4 Jessica Pegula in the last eight.

Jabeur and Vondrousova are set for their seventh meeting at WTA Tour level but this is the clear winner when it comes to picking out their biggest match.

The players are currently tied at 3-3 in their head-to-head although Vondrousova won the last clash, it is Jabeur who holds the win from their only previous meeting on grass.

Vondrousova has beaten Jabeur in their last two meetings which have come in the current season, prevailing at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.

However, Jabeur has been collecting on old debts throughout her Wimbledon run and has the opportunity to avenge those losses, especially her painful exit from the Australian Open.

Jabeur misfired in her build up to Wimbledon with her early exits in Berlin and Eastbourne leading to her being largely written off for Wimbledon.

She has beaten four Grand Slam champions in succession to reach the Wimbledon final and will set out to claim her first Major on Saturday.

Vondrousova may be a former French Open finalist from 2019 but until her Wimbledon run this season, she had not been beyond the fourth round at another Grand Slam.

A former junior No 1 Vondrousova might have fallen into the category of players who achieved great success too soon only to fade away after her Roland Garros exploits as a teenager.

Vondrousova is already a seasoned WTA Tour veteran at the tender age of 24 and while her run at Wimbledon has managed to go largely under the radar, she might just have announced herself as a force to be reckoned with.

Jabeur has turned back the tremendous power of players like Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina and should be able to overcome the slight edge Vondrousova will have in the power of her serve and groundstrokes.
