Armagh vs Derry Preview
Armagh and Derry kick off their All-Ireland Senior Football Championship campaigns on May 24th at 5:00 pm in their Group 4 opener. The hosts enter the tournament as one of the dark horses for the Sam Maguire. Derry is desperate to find form after a winless season that saw them exit the Ulster Championship at the preliminary round and finish bottom of Division One.
Armagh’s balanced game plan and explosive forward line could once again prove too much for a Derry side struggling to contain opposition attacks. Will Armagh make a statement in Group 4, or can the Oak Leaf County produce a shock and finally turn their season around?

Score Prediction: Armagh 2-26 – 0-19 Derry
One of our best GAA predictions is for Armagh to start with a victory over Derry in the All-Ireland group stage. The Orchard County were agonisingly close to winning the Ulster Senior Football Championship final earlier this month. They have recovered from their disappointing league campaign at the right time. Derry are still hunting for a win this year, and Armagh should dominate this game.
Armagh are excellent on both sides of the ball. Their strategy is balanced, combining a strong defensive base with slick transitions into attack. Their midfield players are integral to this style of play. Aidan Forker and Rian O’Neill have a great eye for a pass and will be the key to breaking down Derry. They can turn defence into attack instantly with an incredible knowledge of Gaelic football positions.
O’Neill, in particular, will dictate play and look for those fast transitions. Derry have proven to have one of the worst defences in the country this season, and Armagh’s most creative players will be able to find holes in their defence at will.
In attack, Armagh boasts a potent forward line. Conor Turbitt and Andrew Murnin offer pace and finishing ability in droves. Their movement and link-up play will test Derry’s defensive organisation. Turbitt was excellent the last time these sides met. He went 0-0-4 and scored a free as Armagh sliced through Derry. The Oak Leaf County showed they struggle against Armagh’s attacking talent, and we expect the same again here.
One of the key contests will unfold in the midfield. Armagh’s Tiernan Kelly is set to go head-to-head with Derry’s influential Conor Glass. Kelly is excellent at breaking up opposition play, which will be crucial in asserting Armagh’s dominance in the middle of the pitch. Glass will be the man opposite him, and he has a huge task in keeping Kelly quiet.
Derry will rely heavily on the scoring threat of Shane McGuigan, who remains their most dangerous forward. He has been one of the few shining lights in a terrible season. McGuigan relishes this stage and was the top scorer in the tournament two years ago. If they can get the ball to him, then Derry can at least keep the pressure on Armagh. Armagh’s defence, particularly Paddy Burns, must be sharp and disciplined to contain McGuigan and restrict his impact on the scoreboard.

That is probably the only way they can cause an upset here. Their defence has been terrible all year and shows no signs of improving. They allowed 180 points in the Allianz Football League earlier this year, the second-worst defensive record in the country. Armagh hit 36 past them in their league clash in March. Derry may have to throw caution to the wind and try to outscore their opponents, leveraging their strengths in attack at the behest of their defensive structure.
Although Derry has the individual quality to cause problems, Armagh’s cohesion, tactical sharpness, and recent form give them the edge in this clash. If they can implement their strategy with precision, Armagh will be well-placed to come out on top and take another step forward in their championship campaign.

- Tiernan Kelly (Midfield, Armagh): Tiernan Kelly is the engine of Armagh’s midfield. His work rate, intensity and creativity are what make them tick. He will dictate play at the Athletic Grounds. Kelly’s ability to break up play and make quick transitions from defence to attack can put Derry’s defence on the back foot and help maintain Armagh’s defensive stability. He also brings an excellent scoring threat, making him important in all phases of play.
- Shane McGuigan (Forward, Derry): Shane McGuigan is arguably Derry’s most talented player. While their defence was horrendous in the Allianz League, their attack was far from disgraced. A lot of that goes down to McGuigan’s point-scoring acumen. He is the man who can pose problems for this Armagh defence, and Derry must try to get the ball to him as quick and as often as possible when on the attack.

- Full-Time Result – Armagh to win: Armagh are the favourites for this game. While not favourites to win the tournament, they are considered the best of the outsiders at 8/1. They can start with a victory here and gain important momentum early. These sides last met in the Allianz League National Football League on March 23rd. Armagh heaped the misery on a downtrodden Derry side, winning a one-sided affair 4-24 – 1-18. Kieran McGeeney’s side were in control from the outset. A blistering five-minute spell early in the second half saw them rattle off four goals to end the contest. First-half points from Turbitt and Peter McGrane gave Armagh a 0-12 to 0-8 half-time lead. Ross McQuillan, Barry McCambridge, Conor Turbitt, and Darragh McMullan all hit the net in quick succession early in the second half to push Armagh into an unassailable lead.
Derry, who had Shane McGuigan sent off before the break, struggled to recover and only managed a late consolation goal through Anton Tohill. Despite late efforts from Conor Glass and Caolan Devlin, the result was never in doubt. The Orchard men were ruthless as Derry sank without a trace and were eventually relegated from Division One.
Armagh last played on May 10th, when they met Donegal in the Ulster Senior Football Championship final. Donegal retained their Ulster Senior Football Championship title dramatically, edging past Armagh in a thrilling contest on May 10th. The game saw Jim McGuinness’s men take control early on, opening up a seven-point lead thanks to a blistering spell from Oisín Gallen and a well-taken goal by Hugh McFadden. Armagh, showing tremendous resilience, battled back into contention. Oisin O’Neill and Stefan Campbell played key roles in narrowing the gap.
Donegal responded with another surge, restoring their seven-point advantage, this time capped off by a second goal from Ciaran Moore. Once again, Armagh refused to wilt, and the All-Ireland champions mounted a spirited comeback to level the game. They eventually took the lead for the first time in extra time. However, Donegal struck again during the added period, pulling his side level. Michael Langan’s superb setup allowed Niall O’Donnell to fire over the winning point in the 88th minute, breaking Armagh hearts.
Dery last played on April 6th, meeting Donegal in the Preliminary Round of the USFC. It was yet more woe for the Oak Leafers, who were sent crashing out following a 1-25 – 1-15 defeat. The hosts started strong, building a 1-12 – 1-5 half-time lead. Brendan McCole kept Derry talisman Shane McGuigan scoreless from play, while Donegal dominated the kickouts, disrupting Neil McNicholl’s restarts.
Derry struggled early, converting just one of their first five chances. McGuigan missed a penalty, adding further dismay. They briefly rallied late in the half with two frees to level the game, but Donegal replied with a six-point burst. In the second half, Conor Doherty and Brendan Rogers narrowed the gap, but Donegal’s running game proved too much. Late scores from Ciaran Moore, Peadar Mogan, and Finbarr Roarty sent Derry out with a whimper.
