The Boston Celtics had a disastrous start to the season, going 0-3 until clawing back a pair of wins over the Cavs and Pelicans. The loss of Jayson Tatum through injury has seriously hampered their point scoring. Without him, the offence has looked disjointed at times, relying heavily on Jaylen Brown and Derrick White to carry the load. While both have produced solid numbers, Boston’s spacing and ball movement haven’t reached the levels fans have come to expect.

Philadelphia have started the season brightly, with Joel Embiid back in MVP-level form and Tyrese Maxey continuing his evolution into an elite two-way guard. Embiid’s dominance in the paint, combined with Maxey’s pace and perimeter shooting, gives the Sixers multiple ways to hurt Boston. If the Celtics are to cause an upset, they’ll need a hot shooting night from deep and a near-flawless defensive performance.
But on current form, and given the injury to Tatum, it’s hard to see them maintaining that level for four quarters. Expect a competitive first half before the 76ers begin to assert control through Embiid’s inside dominance and Maxey’s relentless tempo.

The Emirates NBA Cup also tips off on Friday with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls headlining the East Group C. Chicago had a perfect start to the season, winning four from four. Their offence has been sharp, averaging just over 119 points per game, while their bench rotation has provided valuable depth.
Nikola Vucevic has started the season ridiculously well, shooting 64/55/100 in his three games. Josh Giddey has starred early on and was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double against Atlanta. The Bulls are firing on all cylinders so far.

The Knicks have looked very good at home but struggled on the road. They are 2-2, and Jalen Brunson has done so much heavy lifting that it’s a wonder his back hasn’t broken. While he averages over 31 ppg, the Knicks have one of the worst offences in the league, averaging just 110.5 per game, the fourth lowest in the NBA. Brunson may be in MVP-worthy form, but he is only one man. We are going with the home underdog here with Chicago covering healthily.
