Thomas Tuchel has announced the 26-man roster for the England national team for the 2026 World Cup, and his selections have already sparked quite a bit of debate. The German coach will lead England in a major tournament for the first time, and the goal is to finally bring the trophy home. That is why he has opted for players who are in good form and have plenty of match experience, leaving out some top-tier names such as Pope, Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Foden and Cole Palmer.

Coach
Thomas Tuchel
The German coach took over England at the start of 2025 and finally wants to bring the trophy… home. This is Tuchel’s first time coaching a national team, and he’s bringing the same philosophy he had at his clubs: discipline, organization, and a focus on winning titles.

Major Absences / Surprises
England’s squad is one with the most surprising omissions. A few years ago, Alexander-Arnold was the best right-back in the world, and now he won’t even be taking part in the World Cup. Cole Palmer had a tremendous season with Chelsea last year, but his performance this season has left him out of the national team. Harry Maguire may be 33 years old, but he could be a solid option, though Tuchel has a different opinion.
