A squad full of experience, ambition, class and craft. Portugal has all it takes on paper to make a deep run in 2026 World Cup. Roberto Martinez has included all the blue chips available in his final squad list, with 41 years’ old Cristiano Ronaldo been the emblematic headliner of it. The PSG trio of Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves wants to transpose their club dominance onto national teams stage. Bernando Silva and Bruno Fernandes bring excellent playmaking skills to the table and coach Martinez has the know-how of managing big names from his tenure at the head of the “golden generation” of Belgium national football team.

Coach
Roberto Martinez has been in charge of Portugal National football team since 2023. His first major tournament (Euro 2024) was a miss, but his second (Nations League 2025) was a hit as the Lusitanians lifted the trophy. He finished at the 3rd place of 2018 World Cup with Belgium but could not repeat this kind of success in the 2022 World Cup, failing surprisingly at group stage. Martinez wants the best possible outcome for his Portugal team and seems to have all he needs to make it happen.

Major Absences / Surprises
Portugal is one of the few national teams that has no major absences or surprises in the callups. PSG’s left back Nuno Mendes made his recovery from recent injury on time and has been included in the list. The biggest name that has missed the trip to this year’s World Cup is Tottenham’s midflielder Joao Palinha who was part of the 2024 Euro team. The only maverick in the final squad list is winger Goncalo Guedes who has played with Portugal’s jersey for the first time since 2022 on the recent friendly game with Mexico.
