England vs Netherlands Women Preview

England and the Netherlands clash in Euro 2025 Group D on July 9th at 5:00 pm with qualification on the line. A defeat for the Lionesses would probably mean an early flight home after winning the tournament just three years ago.

The Netherlands completed an impressive performance against Wales in their opener and top the group early on. Can England bounce back in Zurich, or will the Netherlands ensure their spot in the knockout stages with a game to spare?

England vs Netherlands Women Predictions

Score prediction: England 2-0 Netherlands

One of our best soccer predictions this week is for England to bounce back with a victory over the Netherlands after disappointment last week. The Lionesses lost their group opener to France, failing to turn dominance in possession into clear-cut chances. However, they now play weaker opponents in their second game. They should have fewer issues in breaking down a strong but ultimately inferior Netherlands team. England’s tactical discipline and technical superiority should prove the difference.

Serena Wiegman’s women will dominate the territory in this game. Georgia Stanway and Kiera Walsh have developed one of the strongest partnerships in international football as part of Wiegman’s double pivot. Their ability to run games and dictate the tempo is integral to how the Lionesses play. They will help England control possession as well as cut passing lanes in transition against a Dutch side that will soak up pressure and attempt to hit them on the counter.

Wiegman’s side is at their best when they dictate the rhythm through short, incisive passing and clever rotations in midfield. Stanway and Walsh are the orchestrators from deep. Expect England’s full-backs to push high, creating overloads out wide and giving their wingers space to isolate defenders.

England will need to stay disciplined at the back, but they should have more joy going forward than they did against France. It is unknown whether Wiegman will stick with the experience of Alessia Russo up top or swap in young star Aggie Beever-Jones. Both women will be desperate to get off the mark. Lauren Hemp and Beth Mead will be crucial in providing width and stretching the Dutch backline. The Lionesses were too one-dimensional in attack against France and will look to utilise their wide players more here.

The Netherlands remain dangerous in transition. Vivianne Miedema is one of the most prolific goal scorers in modern history, registering 100 goals in 126 appearances for Oranje. The Manchester City striker does not need many opportunities to find the net and will be a constant threat in and around the box. She is the kind of player who can set up opportunities for herself. Expect Wiegman to keep her tightly marked.

England must be stronger in this game than they were in their opener. The technical battle looked very tight on paper, but France gained the edge by winning the physical battle. That caused the Lionesses to be sloppy in possession, frequently creating turnovers through poor passing or positioning. If Oranje can disrupt England physically, even by giving away some ‘tactical fouls’, they could break them down mentally and grow into the game.

Ultimately, England’s superior midfield control, experience, and squad depth should see them through. This isn’t likely to be a goal-fest, but it’s the type of match England must win to reassert themselves as real contenders at Euro 2025. It won’t be a walkover, but expect England to dictate the rhythm and gradually wear the Dutch down. Wiegman knows this team well and will have a plan to neutralise their biggest threats.

Players to Watch

  • Beth Mead (Forward, England): Beth Mead remains one of England’s most dangerous attacking threats. The Arsenal forward was the top scorer at Euro 2022 and, after battling back from injury, she has shown signs of returning to her best. She will be integral to stretching this resolute Netherlands’ defence. Mead provides width to the England side, which can create gaps in the Oranje backline. She is also an excellent goalscorer and will be dangerous when cutting on her left. Her link-up play with Hemp, Russo and James could be the key to unlocking the Dutch defence.
  • Vivianne Miedema (Forward, Netherlands): Vivianne Miedema is the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer and reached 100 international goals with a trademark finish against Wales in the group opener. After a long injury layoff, she has returned to form and looks sharp again in the final third. Miedema’s intelligence and composure in tight spaces make her one of the most lethal forwards in the women’s game. She has a unique ability to drop deep, link play, and still arrive in the box to score. England’s centre-backs will need to be at their absolute best to keep her quiet.

England vs Netherlands Women Betting Tips

  • Full-Time Result – England to win: This is a must-win game for England. They will have gone away, licked their wounds after their disappointing opener, and will arrive in Zurich determined. The Lionesses are favourites for this game, and we expect them to live up to that moniker. Bet on England to win, worth 7/10.
  • Player To Score – Aggie Beever-Jones: Alessia Russo was poor against France, managing just one shot in 90 minutes. That game was crying out for Aggie Beever-Jones. Many fans were baffled that she didn’t make an appearance off the bench. Whether she starts or comes off the bench, the Chelsea forward will no doubt have an opportunity to make her mark here, and we think the 21-year-old can make an immediate impact. Bet on her to score anytime, worth 6/4 with our online sportsbook.
  • Both Teams to Score – No: England will dominate possession and spend long stretches of this match camped in the Netherlands’ half. Their pressing and positional discipline make it extremely difficult for opponents to create chances, and the Dutch don’t possess the same attacking threat as France. We expect England to control this game and keep things tight at the back. Back both teams not to score, worth 20/21 for anyone betting on soccer.
  • Over/Under – Over 1.5 England goals: This is our best bet for anyone betting on the over/under. Against a more vulnerable Dutch defence, England should be able to turn sustained pressure into goals. With wide threats like Hemp and Mead and the potential addition of Beever-Jones, the Lionesses have too much firepower. Bet on England to score over 1.5 goals, worth 8/11 with our Euro 2025 betting markets.

England vs Netherlands Women Head-To-Head and Key Stats

These teams last met in December 2023 in a Nations League clash at Wembley Stadium. Ella Toone’s stoppage-time winner secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory for England in a five-goal thriller. The Dutch led 2-0 at half-time through a first-half brace from Lineth Beerensteyn, punishing England’s wastefulness despite early dominance.

Georgia Stanway began the second-half fightback with a well-timed header, before Lauren Hemp rifled in the equaliser just moments later. England continued to push, and substitute Beth Mead came close on her return from injury. With the game seemingly destined for a draw, Toone pounced in injury time to fire home the winner and ignite Wembley.

The Netherlands began their Euro 2025 campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Wales in Lucerne. Despite a disciplined defensive effort from Wales in the first half, Vivianne Miedema broke the deadlock just before the break with a stunning strike, scoring her 100th international goal. Any hopes of a Welsh response were quickly dashed after the restart, as Victoria Pelova doubled the Dutch lead.

Esmee Brugts added a third before the hour mark, capitalising on space at the back post as Wales struggled to cope. Goalkeeper Olivia Clark impressed with several key saves, and the damage for Wales could have been far worse. The Netherlands dominated every area of the game and earned a deserved victory.

England were less fortunate in their opener, meeting France in Zurich. Despite a bright start and flashes of brilliance from Lauren James, the Lionesses struggled to break down a well-organised French side. Alessia Russo thought she had given England the lead, finishing a rebound after Lauren Hemp’s shot was saved. However, VAR ruled it out for offside in the build-up. France took full advantage, with Marie-Antoinette Katoto bundling in the opener in the 36th minute.

Sandy Baltimore doubled Les Bleues’ lead three minutes later. Keira Walsh gave England hope late on with a stunning long-range strike in the 87th minute, but despite a spirited push in added time, Sarina Wiegman’s side could not find an equaliser.

England vs Netherlands Women Predicted Lineups

England Women

Serena Wiegman has no fresh injuries to deal with, but may make some changes to the side that lost to France. The main source of her headache will be in attack. Hemp and Mead were poor out wide, creating very little. Russo was laboured at centre forward. We expect Ella Toone to step in for Mead with Lauren James pushed out wide. Russo will be given another chance to prove herself.

  • Predicted Lineup: Hampton, Carter, Greenwood, Williamson, Bronze; Walsh, Stanway; Hemp, Toone, James; Russo

Netherlands Women

Andries Jonker loaded his midfield in the Netherlands’ opener against Wales. This is a much sterner test, but we don’t expect many changes following their 3-0 triumph. They will match England in shape with record scorer Vivianne Miedema spearheading their attack.

  • Predicted Lineup: van Domselaar, Brugts, Buurman, Janssen, Casparij; Kaptein, Groenen; Roord, Van de Donk, Pelova; Miedema
