Inter Miami vs New York City Preview
Inter Miami will kick off their new campaign with a home game against New York City. The teams will face off at Chase Stadium on Saturday, February 22nd. Many MLS fans are expecting Miami to run away with this season. But can a new manager help them shake off the hangover of last season’s playoff failure?
Meanwhile, New York City is a team stuck in the mud. After the City Football Group took control, much was expected of them, but they’ve yet to deliver. They’re underdogs in this road game, but they’ll believe they can cause a shock. It’s a case of win-now for Miami, so this puts even more pressure on them.
Inter Miami vs New York City Key Stats and Head-to-Head
There’s no doubt that Miami is the most glamorous team in the country right now. Lionel Messi is their bright light and already has a goal this season. He scored against Sporting Kansas City in their CONCACAF Champions Cup first leg. The World Cup winner scored 12 goals with 16 assists for the Herons in 2024. Miami must manage his minutes carefully to maximise his contribution at 37 years old.
Luis Suarez is Miami’s other key forward. He registered 20 goals as the Herons secured a record 74 points to win the Eastern Conference last year. However, there’s a new man in the dugout, Javier Mascherano. The former Barcelona star knows Messi, Suarez, and Sergio Busquets very well and replaces the experienced Tato Martino.

Miami’s big summer signing is Fafà Picault from the Vancouver Whitecaps, who delivered nine goals and six assists last time out. However, they’ve sold Leonardo Campana and declined an option on Matias Rojas despite his nine goals in 2024. Uruguay’s Maxi Falcon adds much-needed steel at the back.
Meanwhile, New York also has a new manager in Pascal Jensen. Jensen previously worked with Ferencvaros in Hungary and AZ Alkmaar. The coach has not had the chance to build his vision and New York is yet to sign any new players. The only noteworthy change was sending starlet Christian McFarland to sister club Manchester City.
Matt Freese is arguably New York’s key player. After a stellar campaign, the goalkeeper won New York’s MVP award in 2024. Mauricio Pochettino called him up to the USMNT for the first time. Freese is also attracting European attention. The Pigeons are desperate to keep him and he will be busy in this match.
Inter Miami vs New York City Predictions
Predicted Score: Inter Miami 1 – 0 New York City
Our soccer prediction is that Inter Miami will defeat New York City in their MLS season opener. We think both teams will be a little rusty as they return to full fitness. Also, Miami had a midweek game against Sporting KC that may cause some fatigue. We believe Miami will eke out a scrappy victory.
We predict Miami has too much firepower for New York to handle. At least one of Suarez or Messi will probably see their name on the scoresheet. These players can produce a moment of magic from nothing. It will be tough for the New York defence to keep them out.
However, Matt Freese will give New York a chance to keep the score down. He’s a superior goalkeeper to Miami’s Drake Callender with a higher ceiling. Callender has improved over the past two seasons but we still think he costs Miami at key moments and they need an upgrade.

There’s a stark difference in quality between these teams. Inter Miami demolished the Eastern Conference last season as they secured a record points total. Meanwhile, New York finished their campaign in sixth position. It’s worth noting New York did progress further in the playoffs, so they can produce outstanding one-off displays.
One big talking point is how the new managers will settle. Javier Mascherano played for two of the biggest clubs in the world Liverpool and Barcelona. However, his managerial career is sparse as Argentina’s U-23 coach. This is his first senior job, and he’s working with his superstar former teammates. Messi reportedly influenced Mascherano’s appointment, so time will tell if it works out.
Pascal Jensen doesn’t have Mascherano’s glamorous background. However, his work in the Eredivisie and the Hungarian top flight may be better preparation for this level. His trouble is the lack of investment in his squad. Alonso Martinez plundered 17 goals last year and Inter Miami must keep him quiet.
Check out the live betting odds during this game. New York is the underdog but has quality in Martinez and Santiago Rodriguez. The odds will shift if they start fast and snatch an early goal. It may be a good chance to pick Miami to stage a second-half comeback.
Inter Miami vs New York City Betting Tips
Inter Miami enters this game as a significant favourite on our sports betting platform. This isn’t a shock because they have an all-star attack and dominated the Eastern Conference in 2024. Betting on Miami makes sense because it would be a shock if they didn’t win this game.
We’re not predicting a rout but Miami should have enough to cut through the New York defence. It’s 8/11 for Miami to secure an outright victory against New York. A successful €10 stake would make €7.27. New York has a decent starting lineup but lacks squad depth. These are excellent odds for what should be a Herons’ win.
Meanwhile, it’s 16/5 for New York City to stun Miami at Chase Stadium. This would be a stunning result and turn a €10 stake into €42. We can see the temptation but it’s a risk because new coach Pascal Jensen is an unknown quantity. Also, Miami has a home advantage and a star-studded squad.
There’s more logic in betting on a draw at 14/5. Miami had a midweek game and they’re still figuring things out under Mascherano. Teams are rarely at their best on the opening day of the season and both sides may be off the pace. A 0-0 result is the most likely scoreline if this happens.

Soccer betting is fun because there are so many markets. Our top tip is betting against both teams scoring in this game. It’s 13/10 for this to happen. New York has firepower in Alonso Martinez, but adding Colo-Colo’s Maxi Falcon enhances Miami’s backline. We think New York will struggle to create opportunities in this game.
You can also make an over-under bet on the number of total goals in this MLS clash. We believe there will be under 1.5 at 18/5. A €10 stake could make a big €36 profit if this happens. If you’re not feeling so brave, it’s 7/5 for under 2.5 goals, so there’s still decent money available!
Meanwhile, it’s 8/1 for Miami to win this game by our predicted 1-0 scoreline. Alternatively, you can get 8/15 odds if Miami leads 1-0 at any time. This is a nice way to profit over 50 per cent from your original stake and could be very tempting for some players. You can also bet on the total number of first and second-half goals as well as winners for both halves.
Don’t forget to check out the anytime goalscorer market. It’s 5/6 for Messi to score in this MLS game and 6/5 for his teammate Luis Suarez. If you’re backing a New York player, we’d pick Alonso Martinez. The Costa Rica international is available at 15/8. Meanwhile, if you’re looking beyond Miami’s big names, consider Leo Afonso at 2/1.
Finally, it’s never too early to bet on the MLS Cup winners. Miami is a resounding favourite to secure the conference and cup titles this year despite crashing out in the first round last season. They’ll hope Javier Mascherano can guide them to the promised land.
