Manchester United vs Arsenal F.C.Preview
Manchester United welcome historic rivals Arsenal to Old Trafford on August 17th in a huge season opener for the two Premier League giants. They clashed in some feisty affairs last season and look to hit the ground running with a big victory on Sunday.
Both teams faced disappointment last campaign, though at opposite ends of the table. Can United begin the road to redemption with a win, or will Arsenal prove their title credentials in Manchester?
Manchester United vs Arsenal F.C. Predictions
Score predictions: Man United 1-2 Arsenal
One of our best soccer predictions this weekend is for Arsenal to edge out Man United at Old Trafford. This is a tough match to call. Manchester United were dreadful last season, but head coach Ruben Amorim is known for his uncanny ability to revolutionise his teams over the summer. Arsenal have not looked quite like champions during preseason, but they have addressed what was considered the missing piece of the puzzle with the signing of striker Viktor Gyokores. Neither team will settle for a draw. We think Arsenal will have just about enough to pull off the win in their season opener.
The Gunners lacked a cutting edge in attack last season, which allowed Liverpool to run away with the title. They drew 14 games, demonstrating their difficulty in turning close matches into wins. However, Viktor Gyokores could be the answer to that problem. The Swedish striker arrived from Sporting Lisbon in July following an incredible 97 goals in 102 games in Portugal. If he carries that form into the Premier League, he could be the answer to Arsenal’s prayers. A strengthened Arsenal forward line can put pressure on a United defence that kept just five clean sheets at home last season, and none against the top five.

Mikel Arteta has also put together the strongest defence in the league. Arsenal conceded a league-low 34 goals last season. They have strengthened their backline with the addition of highly rated young centre back Cristhian Mosquera from Villarreal. A more well-balanced Arsenal side can keep things tight at the back while keeping pressure on United’s defence. However, the Gunners are not the only team to have improved their attack.
United had one of the worst attacking records in the league last season. Only Everton and the three relegated teams finished with fewer goals scored. They have made a concerted effort to improve in that department during the transfer window. They signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbuemo from Brentford. The forwards scored a combined 35 league goals last season and have looked very sharp in preseason. Amorim then added huge talent Benjamin Sesko to complete a new look front line. Arsenal will have to keep them contained if they want to win this game.
Manchester United will also be boosted by the return of several key players from injury, including Lisandro Martínez and Luke Shaw, both of whom missed large chunks of last season. Their presence should improve the structure of United’s backline, which looked disjointed for long spells in 2024/25. Amorim is expected to field a more compact shape than under his predecessor, relying on quick transitions to exploit the space Arsenal’s high line can leave. This tactical shift could make United more dangerous on the break.
Even so, Arsenal’s midfield superiority could prove decisive. Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard will be tasked with dictating the tempo and cutting off United’s supply lines to their front three. If the Gunners can dominate possession and pin United deep, the hosts may struggle to generate enough clear chances. With both sides unveiling new attacking weapons, this could be a cagey but high-quality season opener, with fine margins likely deciding the outcome.
Players to Watch
- Bryan Mbuemo (Forward, Manchester United): Bryan Mbuemo arrives at Old Trafford with the task of injecting pace, movement, and end product into United’s attack. The former Brentford man netted 20 league goals last season, and his ability to drift into dangerous positions from the right will be key against Arsenal’s compact backline. Mbuemo’s combination play with Matheus Cunha has shown promise in preseason. United will look to him to stretch play and create openings in a game where chances may be at a premium.
- Viktor Gyokores (Striker, Arsenal): Arsenal’s marquee summer signing comes with a prolific track record that speaks for itself: 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting Lisbon. Gyokores offers a blend of physicality, intelligent movement, and ruthless finishing that the Gunners sorely lacked last season. His hold-up play will be crucial in bringing Arsenal’s creative midfielders into the game, while his knack for getting on the end of crosses makes him a constant aerial threat. If he can impose himself on United’s centre-backs, Arsenal could finally turn tight games like this into three points.
Manchester United vs Arsenal F.C. Betting Tips
- Full-Time Result – Arsenal to win: It is hard for us to separate these sides in an opening game where we are unsure what to expect. However, Arsenal have the stronger squad on paper and now have a world-class striker to lead the line. This will be tight, but we like a bet on Arsenal to secure a narrow victory at Old Trafford, worth 21/20.
- Both Teams To Score – Yes: These sides have both improved their attack over the summer. This could be a competitive, end-to-end game, and we have so often seen goals in this game. This wager has won in seven of the last nine meetings between these sides. Bet on both teams to score, worth 4/6 with our online sportsbook.
- Player Card – Myles Lewis-Skelly: Myles Lewis-Skelly is one of the best young talents in the league, and could be one of the best left-backs in the world in years to come. The teenager had his breakout season last year and settled into Arsenal’s first team quickly. He plays beyond his years, which can sometimes see him bend the rules, committing tactical fouls. The youngster received six yellows and two reds last season. A bet on Lewis-Skelly to be carded is worth 15/8 for anyone betting on football.
- Match Cards – Over 4.5 cards: This is a classic Premier League rivalry and is often a feisty affair. Last season, we saw 12 yellow cards and one red across three games. Both teams come into this opener with a lot to prove. Arsenal need to demonstrate they are serious about the title this season, and United must exorcise their demons. We are going to see two hungry teams fighting for a win. Anyone betting on the Premier League will know the history between these sides. Bet on over 4.5 cards in the game, worth 11/10.
Manchester United vs Arsenal F.C.Head-To-Head and Key Stats
These sides met three times last season. They shared victories, albeit with United’s coming via penalties in the FA Cup in a 1-1 draw. Their final clash came in the league in March. Arsenal salvaged a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford thanks to Declan Rice’s thumping 74th-minute equaliser, but the result did little to aid their fading Premier League title hopes. Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the first half without finding a breakthrough. They were punished in stoppage time when Bruno Fernandes curled a superb 25-yard free-kick past an out-of-position David Raya.
The Arsenal goalkeeper redeemed himself after the break with excellent saves from Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee. Rice struck from the edge of the box late in the day after United failed to clear. Raya then preserved the point with a miraculous double save to deny Fernandes late on. Arsenal’s 68% possession yielded 17 shots but little threat, underlining their lack of cutting edge. United were poor before showing more fight in the second half.

Manchester United’s preseason under new head coach Ruben Amorim has been steady rather than spectacular, with three draws and two wins from five games. They opened with a goalless stalemate against Leeds before edging West Ham 2-1 and dismantling Bournemouth 4-1. A 2-2 draw with Everton and a 1-1 against Fiorentina rounded off preparations. They showed flashes of attacking improvement and work rate, but lingering defensive lapses.
The summer transfer window has been proactive, focused on fixing last season’s lack of goals. United added Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo before completing the signing of highly rated Benjamin Šeško. These additions have already linked up promisingly in preseason, offering a more mobile, clinical forward line.

| 23 July, 2025 | Win | Arsenal vs AC Milan | 1-0 |
Arsenal’s preseason has been a mixed bag, blending convincing wins with a couple of concerning defeats. They began strongly with a 1-0 victory over AC Milan before edging Newcastle 3-2 in an open contest. Momentum stalled with a narrow 0-1 loss to rivals Tottenham and a 2-3 defeat against Villarreal. However, Mikel Arteta’s side finished preparations in style, sweeping aside Athletic Bilbao 3-0.
The transfer window has been headline-grabbing, most notably with the arrival of prolific Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon. His signing directly addresses last season’s biggest flaw in turning draws into wins. Martin Zubimendi arrived from Real Sociedad. The midfield orchestrator has added poise and class to the centre of the pitch next to Declan Rice. Arsenal also bolstered their defence with highly rated centre-back Cristhian Mosquera from Villarreal. That added depth to an already league-best backline.
Preseason has shown glimpses of Arsenal’s attacking potential with Gyökeres, but defensive concentration and midfield sharpness will be key if they are to hit the ground running against Manchester United.
