The first major appointment of the new football season is set: Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa will meet at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, where they will compete for the UEFA Super Cup. Luis Enrique’s team will aim to retain the title won last year after defeating Tottenham, while facing another Spanish head coach: Unai Emery, who remains one of the biggest specialists in winning European finals. Emery, however, will need to overcome the history books, which show that 12 of the last 13 UEFA Super Cup winners, and 30 of the 50 overall winners of the trophy, have been the reigning Champions League holders. PSG Trophy winner is at odds 2/5 at Novibet.

The finalists

PSG

The current UEFA Super Cup holders will look to extend their impressive winning streak after securing back-to-back Champions League titles. PSG have developed a remarkable record in finals in recent years, showing great composure when it matters most. They lifted the 2025 Champions League trophy after a 5-0 win over Inter, followed by victory in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham (4-3 on penalties) and the 2025 Intercontinental Cup against Flamengo (2-1 on penalties). They also triumphed in the 2026 Champions League Final against Arsenal (4-3 on penalties). On the domestic front, PSG have continued their success, winning the French Cup Finals in 2024 (2-1 against Lyon) and 2025 (3-0 against Reims), as well as the French Super Cup Finals in 2023 (2-0 against Toulouse), 2024 (1-0 against Monaco) and 2025 (4-1 on penalties against Marseille). Their only setback during this impressive run came in the 2025 Club World Cup Final, where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. PSG to Win as Full Time Result is at odds 3/4 at Novibet.

Aston Villa

A major overhaul is taking place at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s team is looking to build on last season’s impressive achievements, which saw them finish 4th in the Premier League and lift the Europa League trophy. The Villans have been particularly active in the summer transfer window. Key departures include midfielders Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea, and Youri Tielemans, who moved to Manchester United, as well as forward Donyell Malen, who returned to Roma after the end of his loan spell. Still, the “Villans” have also strengthened their squad, beating Newcastle United to the signing of highly rated midfielder Manzambi and adding João Gomes to their midfield options. Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez remains the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper, while Ollie Watkins continues to be the go-to guy of Aston Villa’s attack.

Manager Unai Emery knows Paris Saint-Germain very well, having served as head coach of the French club between 2016 and 2018. The 54-year-old coach is a true expert in European finals, having won five Europa League trophies in six finals with three different clubs: Sevilla, Villarreal and Arsenal. Aston Villa Trophy Winner is at 19/10 odds at Novibet.

What is the format of the UEFA Super Cup?

The UEFA Super Cup is an annual fixture between the holders of the Champions League and the Europa League. It determines the “Super Champion” of Europe each year and traditionally marks the start of the season for UEFA’s club competitions, as it is usually followed by the draws for the Champions League and Europa League group stages. Historically, the Champions League winners have always taken part in the Super Cup, initially facing the winners of the Cup Winners’ Cup until 1999. Since 2000, the winner of the UEFA Cup/Europa League has earned a place in the Super Cup.

Extra time skipped in case of a draw

Since 2023, if the UEFA Super Cup is level after 90 minutes, the winner is decided directly by a penalty shoot-out. No extra time is played, in order to protect players from physical strain and excessive fixture congestion at this very early stage of the season. The rule was implemented immediately, with Manchester City defeating Sevilla 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup. Overall, nine of the last 13 UEFA Super Cup finals have been decided after regular time. PSG or Aston Villa Penalty Shootout as Trophy Winning method are both at odds 6/1 on Novibet.
