Key stats

  • Arsenal are without a win in their last four Premier League matches, their poorest run of the season so far.
  • Despite their poor run of results, Arsenal are still scoring. The Gunners have scored three or more in their last five home matches.
  • Frank Lampard’s side have won one of their last 10 Premier League away matches, beating a relegation-threatened Leicester City side.
  • Chelsea are winless in eight matches in all competitions and failed to score in six of those matches.

Arsenal vs Chelsea – Verdict

While there is no such thing as an easy London derby, this does look like an opportunity to get back on track for Arsenal. Manchester City’s 2-1 win on Sunday means the Gunners are now second in the Premier League.

Despite finding the net eight times in their last four matches, the Gunners are winless since a 4-1 victory over Leeds United on April 1. Mikel Arteta’s men have been uncharacteristically sloppy at the back in recent weeks.

Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and Manchester City have all found the net at least twice against Arsenal. Surrendering a 2-0 lead at Anfield and the London Stadium has dented their title chances.

Manchester City compounded their misery when they proved they were a class above on
Wednesday. The fact is that Arsenal could win all five of their remaining games and it probably won’t be enough to claim a first Premier League crown since 2004.

It’s one game at a time for the North London club though. Despite the rivalry, Chelsea could provide an easy opportunity to get back on track.

The Blues are on an eight-match winless streak and failed to score in six of those. They
managed a single goal in a 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion and a double in a home draw with Everton. They have been disappointing.

Arguably, Chelsea’s last Premier League win of any real note came in October when they beat Aston Villa 2-0. Since then, Frank Lampard’s side have beaten Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Leicester.

Nothing about the visitors’ record and performances against the top six sides suggest they’ll get a result here. Chelsea did hold Liverpool to a pair of 0-0 draws, but Arsenal should be too potent to suffer the same fate.

The visitors have lost four and drawn three of their matches against the current top six, but
crucially, they have only scored one goal in that time – an 87th-minute Jorginho penalty against Man Utd. Casemiro levelled the match in injury time.

Chelsea will do their best to stay compact and stay in the game for as long as possible, but there’s no evidence they will score. We expect Arsenal to make a fast start and if they can get an early goal then they should be able to build on that lead and avoid a defensive collapse.
